Samsung Galaxy S5 features to include advanced head tracking gesture controls

According to a European Patent Office filing, Samsung’s first 2014 flagship may include gestures that can be controlled with movements of your head.
Samsung Galaxy smartphone already include some gesture-based features like Smart Stay and Smart Scroll, but it seems the Galaxy S5 will introduce advanced versions of those featured in phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4.
The patent describes the ability to wink or nod your head to control specific functions of the S5. You should also be able to move your head to the left to go back a browser page, or go to the next one with a head movement to the right.
Head tracking detection will be accomplished by splitting the image received by the front-facing camera into specific sections. The camera would track the change in a particular section as a head movement gesture, and then get the smartphone to carry out the required function.
Although the patent filing lists a publication date in January 2014, it was actually filed in July 2013 making it very likely these head tracking gesture controls will make it into the Galaxy S5.
We don’t doubt that the gesture controls will be just as frustrating as last year’s iterations, but we’ll be interested to see if they build upon those in the Galaxy S4.
Earlier this week, Samsung Mobile Executive VP Lee Young Hee let slip that the Galaxy S5 release date will be in March or April and will come with the second-generation Samsung Galaxy Gear.
“We’ve been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time” said Lee. “When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved.”

Moto X features to include Clear Pixel camera
The latest Moto X feature rumours seem to suggest the upcoming Motorola flagship will have a Clear Pixel camera and stock Android.
Featuring a Clear Pixel rear camera and a near to stock Android OS user interface, although the Moto X isn’t said to be a powerhouse device in terms of specs, Motorola is seemingly focused on innovative features for its next flagship.
The new information comes courtesy of Android and Me employee Taylor Wimberley on his Google Plus account, someone who has already made a name for himself as a fairly reliable Moto X source.
“Moto X will feature a Clear Pixel Camera with gesture controls”, wrote Wimberly.
He doesn’t actually provide any further details as to what the Clear Pixel camera is, but we assume it is a marketing term conjured up to rival the HTC UltraPixel technology featured in the HTC One.
“It means ‘dark, blurry pics and lack of details’ will be things of the past…” he later added in the comments.
According to another commenter, Clear Pixel sensor technology will allow the Moto X to perform “two to four times” better in low light conditions, without a battery-draining high powered flash.
The Moto X will also feature a very close to stock version of Android Jelly Bean, potentially the heavily rumoured Android 4.3 OS.
“Moto X will feature a ‘pure Android’ user experience with a commitment to ‘fast upgrade cycles’,” added Wimberly.
Although it won’t be exactly the same as the vanilla Android featured in the Google Nexus 4, Nexus 7 or Nexus 10, the Moto X will supposedly only have a thinly veiled custom UI over the top.
New pictures of the front and back panels of the Moto X have emerged online, showing the upcoming flagship’s thin profile and ultra-slim bezel.

HTC M8 features include navigational bar rather than soft touch buttons

Tipped to launch around MWC 2014, the HTC M8 could lack any soft touch navigational buttons, making it the first HTC device to do so.
According to notorious tech tipster @evleaks, the HTC M8 could feature an on-screen navigational bar rather than the usual array of soft touch buttons located underneath the display.
“M8 will be the first HTC device with on-screen buttons”, reads the @evleaks tweet.
Samsung and HTC are two of the only Android device manufacturers to persevere with capacitive buttons, but it seems HTC’s next flagship could follow in the Google Nexus 5’s footprints.
In the past, Google has argued that the adoption of the navigation bar would help standardise the Android experience, but some manufacturers have been averse to the suggestion.
Android 4.4 KitKat introduced Immersive Mode that make it easier for app developers to take advantage of the device’s full screen estate without losing access to the navigation bar. It can be accessed as a semi-transparent menu by dragging down from the top of the screen, disappearing if it is not engaged with.
This means smartphone and tablet manufacturers have little excuse not to introduce the touch-screen navigation bar rather than a row of soft touch buttons. Removing the latter would allow for reduced bezels and smaller designs without losing screen estate.
Other rumoured features include an enhanced fingerprint scanner, Android 4.4 KitKat, HTC Sense 6.0 UI and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM.
It is also tipped to feature a 5-inch full 1080p HD resolution display and a twin-sensor rear UltraPixel camera.
The HTC M8 should launch at a special event just before the Barcelona-based MWC 2014 conference, perhaps held in London like the HTC One launch.
