Chrome update for Android and iOS adds data save and Translate features

Google is rolling out an update for its Chrome browser app on Android and iOS to make it more efficient on data, and to be able to translate foreign languages within web pages.

An increasing number of people use their smartphones as a primary web browsing tool. It’s as many as a fifth of all adults in the US, according to a recent Pew Internet report.

That’s the report Google has cited in its recent Chrome blog post concerning the latest Chrome app update. The leading new feature is the ability to enable a Reduce data usage mode.

When enabled from the options menu, this feature uses data compression and bandwidth management to reduce data usage on your Android or iOS device by up to 50 percent. It also enables safe browsing for protection against dodgy web pages.

The tool provides a handy tracked to see how much bandwidth you’ve save over the past month.

The second new feature relates to the Chrome app for iOS. Now, like the Android app, you can translate foreign web pages within Chrome with the click of a (virtual) button.

Finally, a new feature for Android owners. You can now create direct shortcuts to your favourite websites from the homescreen. What’s more, some websites will open in full screen and as stand-alone apps in the multitasking menu.

Google’s new version of the Chrome app will be rolling out over the coming days on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

All New HTC One 2 benchmarks reveal significant hardware improvements

A set of All New HTC One benchmarks have appeared online, suggesting that the handset will be quite the powerhouse.

HTC One 2 benchmark

AnTuTu benchmark scores for the HTC One 2, which will launch officially as the All New HTC One, with the handset significantly more powerful than its predecessor, the HTC One.

The surfaced image lists how well the All New HTC One performs against rivals like the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and Samsung Galaxy S4. It outranks all them by a long way, including the powerful Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

It even out-performs the LG G2, which was one of the first handset to be launched with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Sadly, the Samsung Galaxy S5 isnt listed here, so we cant compare it to the latest phones on the market including the Sony Xperia Z2.

This power will most likely come from the HTC One 2’s claimed Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, but will also be down to how HTC optimises the handset.

These benchmarks may not even be carried out on a final version of the software, so we could see the HTC One 2’s performance increase further.

The HTC One 2 is also expected to come with 2GB of RAM, 32/64GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot (as seen in the latest leaked video).

It is also tipped to feature a 5-inch full 1080 x 1920p HD resolution display with a 441ppi image density.

No doubt the device will run on Android 4.4 KitKat, complemented by the latest HTC Sense 6 UI, which is said to bring improvements to the HTC BlinkFeed feature among other things.

From all the leaks and official HTC teasers, we strongly expect the All New HTC One to feature a brand new dual-sensor rear UltraPixel camera and the same aluminium metal uni-body as its predecessor.

The HTC One 2 is being launched on March 25 and TrustedReviews will be there to bring you all the news.

Advent Vega Tegra Note 7 price dropped to £129 99 for Christmas

PC World has dropped the price of the Advent Vega Tegra Note 7 to £129.99 just in time for Christmas.

Entering the market to compete with the likes of the Tesco Hudl and Argos MyTablet, the Advent Tegra Note 7 is PC World and Curry’s own budget tablet.

Now, just in time for last minute Christmas purchases, the Advent Tegra Note 7 costs £129.99, down from its original RRP of £179.99.

The Advent tablet is just a branded version of the Nvidia Tegra Note tablet and so boasts the Nvidia Tegra 4 processor.

Advent Vega Tegra Note 7 Specs

The Advent Vega Tegra Note 7 features a 7-inch 1280 x 800p HD resolution IPS screen with a 215ppi image density.

Offering a 10-hour battery life, the Tegra Note 7 runs on a quad-core Cortex A15 processor and 72-core GeForce GPU within the Tegra 4 chipset.

Nvidia claims the Tegra Note is the fastest Android tablet out there and we certainly found it great for playing mobile games in our review, matching the likes of the Google Nexus 7 2 rather than the Argos and Tesco alternatives.

The Advent Vega Tegra Note 7 has a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing option for video calls. It comes inbuilt with Nvidia Direct Stylus software and Nvidia PureAudio sounds technology powering its front-facing stereo speakers.

It is charged via microUSB and offer microHDMI out, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity.

Flappy Bird to be pulled from iOS and Android app store today

Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyen has suggested that the hugely popular app-based game will be removed from the iOS and Android stores later today.

Despite reportedly generating more than $50,000 (£30,469) per day in ad revenues, the Vietnamese developer has Tweeted that Flappy Bird is to be pulled from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store within a matter of hours, stating “I can’t take it anymore.”

“I am sorry Flappy Bird users, 22 hours from now, I will take Flappy Bird down. I cannot take this anymore,” Nguyen Tweeted 19 hours ago, giving the game just three hours of life left at the time of writing.

Having become the latest global app sensation, Nguyen appears to have grown weary of Flappy Bird’s success stating: “Press people are overrating the success of my games. It is something I never want. Please give me peace."

Flappy Bird, an 8-bit inspired game which requires users to navigate a series of gaps formed by Mario-esque green tunnels, by tapping the screen to flap the bird’s wings is currently atop both the iOS and Android free download charts.

Although questions have been raised around Flappy Bird’s similarities with Mario, and former app hit Tiny Wings, independent developer Nguyen has insisted that the decision to remove the app is not based on legal pressures.

“It is not anything related to legal issues. I just cannot keep it anymore,” Nguyen stated via his official Twitter feed.

He added: “I also dont sell Flappy Bird, please dont ask.”

Although promising to remove Flappy Bird from sale later today, Nguyen has insisted this will not be his last app-based effort, stating: “I still make games.”

Earlier this week it was revealed that a Flappy Bird Windows Phone app would be released next week, a launch that now looks to be in jeopardy.

Motorola Moto G price dropped to £100 on Vodafone

One of the most competitively priced handsets just got even cheaper, as Vodafone confirms it is to offer the Motorola Moto G for just £100 on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Having launched late last year alongside a £135 price tag, the Motorola Moto G partners a mid-range specs sheet with a firmly entry level price tag which, thanks to Vodafone, is now set to be even kinder on consumers’ wallets.

“The new Motorola Moto G is now available at Vodafone UK for just £100 on pay as you go,” the company has confirmed.

Although a brilliant deal, this bargain basement Motorola Moto G price does come with one small string attached, the £100 fee is only available “when bought with a £10 top up or Freedom Freebee.”

Vodafone is not the first retailer to offer the already cheap Moto G at a further reduced price, with Tesco currently offering the handset alongside a £110 price tag.

Playing host to a 4.5-inch 720p HD display, the Motorola Moto G specs sheet sees the 11.6mm thick plastic bodied handset powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor.

Running 1GB of RAM and Google’s Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS from the box – an Android 4.4 KitKat update is already available – the Moto G’s features list is rounded off by the inclusion of a 5-megapixel camera around back and a secondary, 1.3-megapixel snapper up front.

The Motorola Moto G was crowned Product of the Year in the 2013 TrustedReviews Awards back in December.

Apple iPhone 5S to boast slow motion video capture

The next generation iPhone 5S handset could arrive packing a new-and-improved slow motion video camera, according to reports on Tuesday evening.

The company is working on a new killed video capture feature thatll debut on the new handset, facilitated by the final version of iOS 7, according to one developer who studied the operating systems beta code and passed on his findings to the 9to5Mac blog.

The new feature is called Mogul, according to Hazma Sood, and would allow video to be captured at an impressive 120-frames-per-second. This could crisp and clear slow-motion video mode being added to the devices camera functionality.

Heres what 9to5Mac had to say: "According to our analysis and testing of the code, “Mogul” is a feature in development that allows the iPhone to capture video at an exceptionally fast and precise rate. Specifically, our testing indicates that the feature can allow the iPhone to record video at a rate of 120 frames-per-second (FPS). The resolution at which this 120FPS video could be recorded at, however, is currently unclear."

Of course, Apple wouldnt be first smartphone manufacturer to bring this feature to market. Samsungs flagship Galaxy S4 also offers 120fps, slow motion video.

The iPhone 5S is rumoured to be Apples bi-annual soft update and is expected to retain the iPhone 5s form factor.

It is expected to debut a new, faster and more powerful processor and perhaps a 13-megapixel camera too. Other rumours have suggested a fingerprint sensor could be introduced for the first time, although thats probably an outside bet at this stage.

Could a high-resolution, high-speed video feature be the killer feature to half Samsungs rise when the iPhone 5S arrives this autumn?

Zooming in on the Lumia 1020s camera apps and features

Its seemingly impossible to go a week without a new smartphone announcement, with manufacturers falling all over themselves to announce the "next big thing."

Some may be tempted to write off yesterdays reveal of the Nokia Lumia 1020 as just another debut of yet another Windows Phone 8 device, albeit one with a humungous camera, but the Finnish firm is hoping consumers will find that it actually enhances the mobile phone experience.

When CEO Stephen Elop took the stage to put the focus on the bombastic 41MP Pureview camera fitted into the Lumia 1020s frame, he showed the world the Nokia is ready to evolve beyond the traditional idea of a smartphone.

In addition to attempting to blaze a new path in the cellphone sphere, Nokia believes its latest flagship will offer prospective users true control and confidence in capturing their lives at the press of a button.

Two camera apps, one focus

That the Lumia 1020 has a better camera than most point-and-shoots, and low-end DSLRs for that matter, shouldnt intimidate potential users.

For Nokia, one of the core concepts of its latest phone is putting confidence back in the hands of the amateur photographer.

According to the companys research, consumers will take 7-10 pictures with a camera just to make sure they got the right image.

As Nokias reps explained to us, with the Lumia 1020, the first picture you take will hopefully be the picture you keep. Granted, it make take the phone a little longer to save the 15MB image, but the aim is that its worth the wait.

The phones Pro Camera app should alleviate some of the unease and uncertainty users might have about getting the shot just right, as well.

Useful features like Reframe allow you to craft multiple images from just one massive 41MP shot, while more experienced photographers will still find all the ISO, f-stop, and shutter speed options they could hope for, allowing them the same level of customization they have with a full camera in a device decidedly smaller. The features arent inaccessible to the non-photogs among us, either.

The Smart Camera app provides a range of "been there, done that" options at a slightly lower resolution, but is still capable of offering more creative ways to personalize your pictures.

Though you wont be able to take 41MP images with Smart Camera on, youll have much more freedom and flexibility for action shots and editing within Nokias built-in Creative Studio.

Technically, theres a third camera app in the default Windows 8 camera, but its not fine-tuned for the new Pureview lens like the other two Nokia-developed apps.

It will still take pictures just like youd expect, but it doesnt offer any of the bonus features found in either Smart Camera or Pro Camera.

Regardless of which app you use, all photos are taken with the new stabilization, multi-layered lens, and flash, which should help give even novices a chance at capturing the elusive "perfect" image.

The forest for the trees

Unless youve got an actual photographer in your family, most of your photo albums are probably full of either close-ups or wide-angle shots.

Your smartphone camera album is probably even worse, as most digital zooms end up looking awful and distorted.

Pro Cameras Reframe takes all the guesswork out of the equation, and lets you snap pictures now and decide what the story is later, without the loss of pixel density or fidelity.

To be fair, in our time with the Lumia 1020, we found zooming in all the way for the tiniest of details left things muddled, but the range of post-photo zooming is miles above whats available elsewhere.

Reframing works as soon as the photo is saved, giving you the choice of repurposing the still to your exact specifications quickly and easily.

While more savvy photo fiends are already doing these kinds of things in editing programs on their computers, having the option available instantly and on the go certainly helps the Lumia 1020 appear more flexible for the average consumer.

Simple and smart

Even if youll be losing some of the ridiculous pixel density by using the Smart Camera app, there are still some advantages to the secondary application.

Weve seen camera features like action shots, multi-shots, face-swapping, and the ability to wipe moving objects before, but that doesnt make them any less relevant for a phone like the Lumia 1020.

By including a wealth of options like those above, Nokia has effectively eliminated the hoping and praying typically associated with trying to get just the right shot.

In theory, users will be able to take solace that no matter what, theyre going to get the shot they wanted... with a little help from Nokias software.

Of course, theres something to be said for the lens and flash coming with the Lumia 1020 as well, as those components will do a lot of the heavy lifting in making sure photographs turn out the way you intended.

Intelligent design

The Xenon flash isnt as harsh as an LED flash, but it is brighter and faster, which means images taken in low-light will come out stronger, even if people are moving.

Outside of turning the flash on or off, thats not something youll ever have to manage; thats just the way the phone is built.

Additionally, the five lenses (one glass, four plastic) compacted together to create the Pureview design have stabilization measures built-in to ensure they all move in unison.

By ensuring the lenses will never be out of sync, you have a markedly lower chance of shaky cam happening with stills or with video.

Again, this should aid in taking all of the worry out of picture-taking, which in turn allows users have faith in their abilities, and should keep them snapping away without having to worry about standing perfectly still.

Point of sale

The Lumia 1020 is still a pricey piece of hardware (priced at $299.99 in the U.S. or about £199/AU$327) when compared to some competitors, but Nokia and its products appear set to take a different path than phones like Samsung Galaxy S4 or the HTC One.

The Lumia 1020 doesnt quite hold up to the screen and hardware power of its top rivals, but as the line between spec-heavy devices has blurred, Nokias phone is a bold statement about where it sees itself going in the future.

Based on our earliest impressions, every aspect of the Lumia 1020 has been fine-tuned to appeal to the snap-happy consumers that have flooded social networks with pictures of everyday life, while also offering power and performance that should impress pros.

As it will be arriving in just a few weeks in the U.S., we wont have long to wait to discover if consumers are willing to shell out premium prices for the convenience, and confidence, the Lumia 1020 provides.

Alcatel to launch solar powered smartphone within 12 months

Alcatel has confirmed that it will launch a new solar powered smartphone within the next 12 months, with the handset’s sun-loving panel to be built within its screen.

Bringing solar powered portable gadgets in to the modern era, the French phone manufacturer has showcased a concept solar phone that, instead of boasting an ugly light panel on its rear, builds a transparent solar panel within the phone’s touchscreen display.

“A couple of months ago we partnered with a company and said ‘let’s try make a transparent solar panel’,” Dan Dery, Alcatel’s Global Vice President of Marketing told TrustedReviews. “It seemed crazy but now we have a working prototype where we have put solar cells over the touchpanel of a display.”

Discussing the future of the battery-saving technology he added: “We are not going to market with the solar phone quite yet. It is probably going to take us another nine to 12 months in order to make sure that the efficiency of the panel is absolutely fine and the transparency level is ok.

“Today the transparency is not where we want it to be – you can see a slight layer on top – but we are trying to see if we can include this within 12 months.”

With battery life being one of the biggest ongoing concerns for smartphone users, Dery has suggested that the transparent solar panel technology could help revolutionise the market, offering added staying power and reducing the reliance on power connectors.

“If you ask consumers what is there major concern, it is often that they have to carry a charger with them to charge their phone and with LTE coming this is getting worse because the content we enjoy requires more power,” he said.

“The target for the solar phone is that in an indoor environment it should be able to maintain an idol current so your phone battery is not depleting, outdoor under the sun it should charge, those are the targets we have.”

The Alcatel VP added: “We are not too far away from this efficiency but currently not quite there. I think we are the only one in the world to demonstrate that.”

While there are concerns this new technology will add a premium to any handset’s price tag, Dery has reassured that the company’s solar powered phone will not dent your wallet.

“If this would require us to bring the phone to a crazy price we would not do that,” he told us. “Everything is about what we can do for normal consumers, those who are not ready to spend $600 every year for a new phone.”

iPhone 5S home button leak points to fingerprint reader inclusion

The iPhone 5S home button has leaked, with the prematurely unveiled component suggesting Apple’s next flagship phone could add a fingerprint reader.

With the biometric security measure one of a number of frequently touted iPhone 5S features expected to be included, the newly leaked iPhone 5S home button shows a number of differences over its predecessor, hinting that the fingerprint scanner could be set for inclusion.

Hitting the web courtesy of repeated Apple tipster Sonny Dickson, the iPhone 5S home button has been caught in a range of high resolution images.

The clear shots back up grainy, blurred images that appeared earlier in the week claiming to show the iPhone 5S home button with an integrated fingerprint reader in tow.

Describing the leaked component, the newly emerged reports state that “the sensors and flex cable bear a remarkably different design when compared to the iPhone 5 home button.”

Earlier this week Apple issued invites to its upcoming iPhone 5S launch event, with the new flagship phone expected to be formally unveiled alongside the heavily rumoured budget iPhone 5C this coming Tuesday, September 10.

Expected to hit retailers shortly after next week’s unveiling, the iPhone 5S release date has been tipped as the following Friday, September 20, with Chinese networks having already accidentally leaked the imminent arrival.

Far from the first time the iPhone 5S has been mooted to incorporate a fingerprint reader, the technology has been an expected inclusion since Apple’s acquisition of smart sensor specialist AuthenTec last year. Reports in recent months have claimed the fingerprint features will work alongside new NFC connectivity options to offer more secure mobile payment options.

No more Android updates for HTC One S after just one year on sale

HTC has confirmed that its 2012 mid-range handset, the HTC One S, will not receive any further Android updates.

The highly-rared device, launched in April last year, will not get Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean or Key Lime Pie after that, and will be stuck on Android 4.1 for ever more.

The 15-month-old handset also wont receive the latest version of HTC Sense, although thatll be of far less significant to most who recently snapped up the device.

In a befuddling statement, the company said it understood some users disappointment, but for some reason thinks the amazing camera and Beats Audio experience already present on the device make up for it.

HTC said: "We can confirm that the HTC One S will not receive further Android OS updates and will remain on the current version of Android and HTC Sense. We realize this news will be met with disappointment by some, but our customers should feel confident that we have designed the HTC One S to be optimized with our amazing camera and audio experiences."

Perhaps something was lost in translation?

It is a somewhat surprising move from HTC as it seeks to win back some of the customers it has lost to the Samsung Galaxy range of smartphones.

Those thinking of buying a new handset from the company may think twice if they believe the device will become practically obsolete after only a year on sale.

In somewhat better news for those already rocking the newest HTC One handset, the company has started rolling out Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean in some international markets today. The latest word we had was that itd be arriving in the UK sometime this month.

LG tipped to equip all 2014 flagships with fingerprint scanners

LG could equip all its 2014 flagships with fingerprint scanners, if the latest information is accurate.

According to a new rumour, LG will not only fit the LG G3 with a fingerprint scanner, but other high-end devices too.

A report from the Korean site, ETNews has suggested the LG G3 and the LG G Pro 2 will feature fingerprint scanners similar to that of the iPhone 5S.

Other devices like the HTC One Max have implemented fingerprint scanners, but they haven’t been quite as successful, accurate or well-placed as Apple’s Touch ID sensor embedded in the iPhone 5S home button.

We wonder whether LG will choose to embed the fingerprint sensor within the rear buttons introduced with the LG G2.

“Rather than to simply apply fingerprint recognition functionality, it is important to improve security and user convenience at the same time,” said the LG Electronics insider. “We will give prominence to our functional differentiations in order not to suffer the disgrace of being called a mimicker to follow what the competitors do.”

The insider suggests LG will apply fingerprint sensors to “four – five premium models including the two this year”.

LG will have to compete with the fingerprint sensor technology potentially included with the Samsung Galaxy S5 as well as whatever Apple pulls out of the bag with the iPhone 6.

The latest rumour is that the Galaxy S5 will feature a fingerprint sensor under the screen.

“To improve its presence in the premium smartphone market, LG Electronics needs to apply innovative functions, such as optical image stabilising (OIS), fingerprint recognition, to its smartphones ahead of its competitors,” said a stock market analyst. “Attention is drawn to how LG Electronics will use fingerprint recognition functionality, which has become rather stale, in differentiating its products.”

Motorola CEO criticises Apple over iPhone price

Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has criticised Apple over the high pricing of the iPhone, despite claiming this premium fee could help his company regain ground in the smartphone race.

Suggesting that Apple has kept the iPhone price high despite significant drops in component prices, Woodside has claimed that, moving forward, Motorola will launch more competitively priced handsets in a bid to capitalise on this gap in the market.

“When the iPhone first came out it cost $650 and today it costs $650,” the Motorola CEO said speaking with TrustedReviews.

He added: “The functionality is the same – it’s better but it’s very similar – and we know that the cost of components has continued to fall. We think the prices of high quality devices has to change.”

As well as knocking Apple for its high smartphone costs, the Motorola head has outlined how he expects to use this to his benefit.

Looking to the future, Woodside stated: “We think there’s an opportunity particularly as mobile computing becomes less of a privilege and more of a necessity. There’s a huge market for that type of product which, for some reason, the smartphone industry has not really focussed on.”

He added: “The Moto G was the first attempt to put something out there that was super-compelling value. Something that can help our business get scale and get back into Europe, but can also provide a whole new generation of consumers with a really compelling, simple, intuitive Android experience which we think is important.”

Unlike the iPhone 5S, or even the iPhone 5C which cost wannabe owners from £549 and £469, the Motorola Moto G costs just £135 despite being bestowed with an array of specs more befitting a device twice the price.

Boasting a 4.5-inch, 720p HD display, the Motorola Moto G specs sheet sees a 1.2GHz quad-core processor line up alongside a 5-megapixel forward-facing camera, 1GB of RAM and Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS.

Nokia Lumia 1820 and Lumia 1525 specs leak ahead of MWC unveiling

Specs for the Nokia Lumia 1820 and Nokia Lumia 1525 have leaked online ahead of an official MWC unveiling.

Nokia could be making quite an impact at this year’s MWC if the latest leaked specs for its upcoming handsets turn out to be accurate.

Acccording to a brand new source named @NextLeaks, Nokia will launch the flagship Lumia 1820 and the Lumia 1525 phablet will be launched at the show.

Of course, this new tipster doesn’t have the proven track record of someone like @evleaks, but we really hope these specs are the real deal.

The Lumia 1820 will reportedly feature a 5.2-inch 2K 2048 x 1080p resolution display running on a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor with 3GB of RAM.

It will be powered by a 3,400mAh battery, feature 32GB of internal storage and have a microSD card slot.

In the rear will be a Xenon flash and a Lytro-like camera that allows post-capture retouching from within the phone itself.

Apparently, it’ll be released in March 2014 and will have a similar design to the metal-bodied Nokia Lumia 925.

The information from @NextLeaks also suggests the Lumia 1525 phablet will have exactly the same hardware, including that super-speedy Snapdragon 805 processor.

However, it’ll come with a 6-inch 2K display that will feature solar panels within it to charge the 3,400mAh battery.

It will also feature a 25- or 30-megapixel rear camera, rather than the Lytro-style option of the 1820.

There’s no indication that the specs above are correct, but they do sound like the spec sheet dream.
