Draw Wars Android Game Review

Draw Wars: Real-time strategy in bite-sized chunks

With Draw Wars, we have a unique and ambitious blend of puzzle and real-time strategy, combining the well-trodden ground of wartime tactics with the freedom of touchscreen manoeuvres.

In a sense, the name of the game says it all. Each level sets you on a terrain with a certain limited amount of resources (Tanks, infantry, planes e.t.c.) to attack the enemy’s base while defending your own. You do this by drawing paths for your vehicles to follow, destroying enemy vehicles and the enemy base to complete the level. Once you’ve decided your initial plans, everything goes into real-time and your tactics will require timing as well as cunning. Upon completion, the familiar three-star system rewards you for how well you did, as well as giving you cash to upgrade and buy items like mines and artillery.

Considering all the hurdles which could’ve led Draw Wars horribly astray, the developers have pulled this game off remarkably well. Once the tutorial levels are completed and you are settled in, the gameplay develops a rhythm and sucks you in, gradually introducing new vehicles and elements to keep its momentum. The freedom of how you approach each level makes completing them satisfying but enough effort is put into their design to make sure you (mostly) have to face a challenge to get there.

I do however have a problem with how your vehicles automatically stop, lock on to enemies and start shooting, even if you don’t want them to. While I understand how this feature may be sometimes convenient (for you and the developers), it is more often than not a real annoyance. Furthermore, I’m not a big fan of the vehicle upgrade system, which puts grinding into the equation and takes some of the puzzle elements out. If a sequel is ever made, it would be great to see the developers do something about these aspects.

o complement the gameplay, the graphics and sound design are very impressive, doing a good job of setting the tone and immersing you into the game. Due to this high quality, it is perhaps unsurprising that Draw Wars suffers from the dreaded Full Screen Ads Syndrome, sometimes even initiating them in the middle of gameplay. At this point, they become worse than simply inconvenient and detract from an otherwise excellent game. (Note: they only appear if you are connected to the internet)

Being a good all-round package, I don’t hesitate in recommending Draw Wars. These developers have shown that ambition, coupled with some innovation and attention to detail, can lead to success in the games market. Hopefully, there’s more to come!

Rating: 4/5

iPhone 6 release date news rumours and price updated

There are few, if any, products in the world that spark as much consumer interest and press coverage than an update to the iPhone. The next iPhone is on its way but will it be called the iPhone 6, or the iPhone 5S?

The question on everyones lips is will it be an iterative update using the same chassis as the iPhone 5, just like the iPhone 4S was to the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 3GS was to the iPhone 3G.

Besides wanting to know whether the iPhone 6 will be coming this year, many of the questions surrounding the iPhone 6 launch include whether it’ll get BlackBerry Messenger, whether it’ll get a bigger screen and whether it will follow in the footsteps of Sony’s Xperia Z and be waterproof.
Some of the most fanciful rumours making the rounds centre on the iPhone 6 having a projector, being transparent and having a hologramatic screen. It’s highly unlikely any of these will transpire in the next iteration of the iPhone but concepts and patents filed by Apple fuel the rumours.

We’ll be updating this article regularly but here’s everything we know about the iPhone 6 so far, including how itll differ from the iPhone 5.

iPhone 6 release date

Apple is sure to unveil its next iPhone later this year. Since 2007 when the first iPhone was released, every year has seen a new iPhone outed.

The release schedule of previous iPhones shows a very clear pattern too – Apple plans its launches with incredible precision.

iPhone – June 2007
iPhone 3G – July 2008
iPhone 3GS – June 2009
iPhone 4 – June 2010
iPhone 4S – October 2011
iPhone 5 – September 2012

The early days of the iPhone series were all about summer launches, but these days Apple has skipped a few months back. Its last two phones were unveiled in September or October.

And, naturally, we’re highly unlikely to see an iPhone 6 arrive in July given we’re already in the thick of it. A September launch is likely.

A July release date was speculated earlier in the year, the source being a leaked document from a Japanese network, but that just goes to show you can never trust rumours.

The first we hear of the Apple launch is likely to be when the invites go out, which could be as late as two weeks before the event itself. However, previous Apple events have been revealed after having their venue booking details leaked. We’ll be back as soon as any such leaks happen.

The next iPhone will launch alongside iOS 7, which was revealed at WWDC 2013 in June, again pointing towards a possible mid-September unveil – Apple says it’ll arrive in the ‘Fall’.

However, if the next iPhone turns out to be the iPhone 5S, it’s likely that we’ll have to wait until 2014 to see the iPhone 6.

That said, there is a third possibility. Some suggest that the long-rumoured ‘low-cost’ iPhone will be called the iPhone 5S, and that the next full-fat iPhone will be the iPhone 6. In that case, both may launch this year.

However, this creates some most un-Apple-like series continuity issues – namely that the iPhone 5 would have higher-end construction than the iPhone 5S.

iPhone 6 price

Apple has a strict approach to pricing. It almost never cuts its prices mid-cycle, only lowering prices when an iPhone goes from being the ‘current’ model to an older legacy phone.

It’s not into doing anything that’ll devalue its products.

This policy is likely to mean the next iPhone costs roughly the same amount as the current one – which starts at £529 for the 16GB model.

The price escalates to £599 for the 32GB model and £699 for the 64GB phone.

iPhone 6 specs

When assessing a phone’s power, there are three main elements to consider – the CPU, the GPU and the RAM.

In pure figures terms, Apple’s iOS series CPUs have never sounded that impressive. They stuck to dual-core chips while Android rivals moved onto quad-core CPUs, but they have actually been quiet trailblazing of late.

The iPhone 5’s A6 processor uses a custom system architecture rather than the ‘off the shelf’ type seen in the vast majority of phones.

However, as our Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5 feature showed, Apple needs to play catch-up in this area. The iPhone 6 is likely to feature a quad-core processor, rumoured to be clocked at 1.2GHz. 2GB of RAM is also likely.

This would make the iPhone 6 the very first quad-core Apple mobile device. At present, the most powerful in the iOS family is the iPad 4, which stuck with a dual-core main processor.

However, it is rumoured that the iPhone 6 will use the same GPU – the graphics chip – as the iPad 4, the PowerVR SGX554MP4.

This may sound like a disappointing improvement given the iPad 4 was released in 2012, but consider the difference in screen resolution – the iPad 4 screen has over 3 million pixels, the iPhone 5 under one million.

A lower-resolution screen needs less power to render visuals of the same perceived quality.

iPhone 6 Colours

One of the most interesting changes we’ll see in the next-generation iPhone is the introduction of a bit of colour. Claimed leaked prototypes suggest we’ll see five colours, including green, blue, pink and yellow.

Colour joined the Apple family – which has traditionally been all about black, white and silver – with the last iPod touch. You can get the aluminium rear of the music player cast in more-or-less the same shades we expect to see in the next iPhone.

This was only really made possible by the design switcheroo made by the iPhone 5. The previous two generations of iPhones prior to this one were topped with glass on both sides, and creating colour editions would have been a serious manufacturing challenge. Now that the rear of the phone is aluminium, colour editions will be much easier to produce.

However, there have been suggestions that the papped colourful iPhones are the long-rumoured ‘budget’ iPhone.

iPhone 6 software

If the iPhone 6 arrives in 2013 rather than 2014, the phone will definitely run iOS 7. This software was unveiled in June and will power all new iOS devices following its release alongside the next iPhone.

Although the software is not publically available, it has already been released to developers. We know exactly what it looks and feels like already.

iOS 7 is Jonathan Ive’s redesign of the system – he was at the helm of the design team for most of Apple’s iconic products including the iPod and MacBook.

A new look is one of the most important changes. Icons are sharp rather than rounded and other aspects of the interface have taken some cues from Android.

For example, the drop-down notifications menu gives you control over phone features.

However, the system still doesn’t offer home screen widgets, which are what many iOS detractors have been asking for.

iPhone 6 screen

One of the most speculated-about elements of the iPhone 6 is its screen. Will it be bigger? Will it be higher-resolution?

In early 2013, there were rumours that Apple was planning to release two phone in 2013 – a 4-inch phone and a larger 4.8-inch one, the latter most likely to be dubbed ‘iPhone 6’.

iLounge’s Jeremy Horwitz clarified the rumours with his own sources, saying that while a 4.7-inch device was in prototyping stage, it’s “certainly not expected in 2013.”

Horwitz wrote in January that the iPhone 5S will arrive in 2013, will have a 4-inch screen like the iPhone 5.

It is also possible that the next-generation iPhones will use Sharp IGZO screens rather than the Sharp IPS displays used in the iPhone 5. These offer more efficient power consumption than the current type.

iPhone 6 camera

The next iPhone is likely to use a Sony camera sensor similar to those seen in the Sony Xperia Z and Samsung Galaxy S4, if the iPhone 6 is to follow the series’s current direction.

Both the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 use an 8-megapixel Sony sensor – much as people may think Apple only uses its own components, it does not. Using the same sensor for three generations of iPhones is highly unlikely.

Most of this year’s top phones, including the Galaxy S4, use 13-megapixel Sony-manufactured camera sensors.

The two most notable exceptions are the 8.7MP Nokia Lumia 925 and HTC One, but both of those use rather different technologies to make their cameras stand out.

It’s unlikely that the iPhone 6 will make the same moves. The iPhone 6 is likely to be too slim to fit in the OIS components needed to copy the Lumia 925, and using a low-resolution, high pixel pitch sensor like the HTC One’s is a move that could misfire marketing-wise.

We expect the iPhone 6 to use a higher-resolution sensor and a familiar LED flash. Improvements in image quality are likely to be down to an improvement in lens construction and better noise reduction algorithms in the camera’s software.

There are clear improvements to be made in the iPhone 5’s camera lens too. It’s a reasonable f/2.2 construction, but beaten by several others these days, including the F/1.9 Lumia 720 and f/2.0 HTC One.

These figures are the cameras’ f-stop rating, which is the ratio between the diameter of the lens aperture and the focal length of the lens. The lower the figure the better – indicating that it’ll let in more light within the same exposure time, therefore giving the potential for faster shooting in good light and better low-light performance in gloomy situations.

iPhone 6 rumours

The rumour mill is always flying around the launch of another iPhone but what are the rumours to look out for?

Fingerprint scanner

The integration of a fingerprint scanner in the iPhone 6 has been heavily rumoured. Apple patents suggest it could be hidden within the phones bezel.

Plastic iPhone

Could the iPhone 6 be made of plastic? Not likely but there are plenty of rumours suggesting a budget iPhone may be launched on the same release date as the iPhone 6.

Summer release date

In June pics of the iPhone 6 or 5S were reportedly snapped on a production line. If thats the case and production is already underway we could see an early release date in August.

iPhone 6 – Worth the Upgrade?

If we assume the iPhone 6 is to arrive this year, it’s unlikely to be a huge upgrade. All the rumours point to a sensible rather than hugely dynamic generational shift. We’ll get more power, a more advanced screen and updated software – although all recent iPhones will get the latter.

If the iPhone 6 is to land in 2014, it could well be a more dynamic device that, like the iPhone 5 did, changes the form of the device altogether by adding a larger screen. However, it’s too early to tell, especially given Apple is unlikely to have finalised the design of a product more than a year in advance.

Red Samsung Galaxy Note 3 launches in the UK alongside Rose Gold option

Samsung has expanded its phablet collection, with a red Samsung Galaxy Note 3 having launched in the UK alongside a ‘Rose Gold’ colour option.

Formally unveiled back in December, the two new SamsungGalaxy Note 3 colours are now available to purchase in the UK, with retailer and high street chain Carphone Warehouse offering both new devices alongside the standard black and white hued options.

Available across a range of networks, including O2, Vodafone and EE, the 4G capable red Samsung Galaxy Note 3 can be snapped up for free on two year contracts starting from as low as £32 per month.

Aside from their new paint jobs, the red and rose gold Samsung Galaxy Note 3 handsets do not differ in any way to the original monochrome models released shortly after the handset’s IFA unveiling last September.

Centred around a stunning 5.7-inch display with a 1080p Full HD resolution, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 packs a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor alongside 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, further expandable via microSD card.

With a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3’s specs sheet is further enhanced by a 2-megapixel, secondary snapper up front and Google’s Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS, although an Android 4.4 KitKat update is already available.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Review

Key Features: 20.7 megapixel camera; Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB RAM;
4.3-inch 720p screen 341PPI; microSD;
Android 4.3; IP55/58 water and dust proof

Manufacturer: Sony

What is the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact?

In an age when flagship phones are being fed red meat and steroids to make their screens grow as big as possible, Sony bucks the trend with the Xperia Z1 Compact. Its a powerhouse with a diminutive 4.3-inch display that costs around £430. It may be small, as hard as you look, you won’t find the performance compromises that the HTC One Mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini are lumbered with.

But does packing top-notch specs in a compact phone make sense? We think it does.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact – Design

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact looks like a fun-sized version of the 5-inch Xperia Z1. And that is a very good thing.

Its single-piece aluminium frame makes it rock solid, and the curved edges nestle perfectly in the creases of your hand. The frame is sandwiched between two pieces of glass with a thin plastic join.

The construction is similar to that of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, but is actually more comfortable to hold because of the soft curves. However, the toughened glass back is prone to fingerprint marks and, much worse, scratches – not a problem if you intend to use a case, but the Z1 Compact feels so good in the hand it’d be a shame to alter the shape even slightly.

The button layout of the Z1 Compact is similar to that of the Z1. All the covered ports and slots for microSD, SIM and charger are placed on the left, while the power button, volume rocker and dedicated camera button are on the right.

It would have been a nice touch for the volume and camera buttons to match the stylish metal Xperia power button but instead they are plastic. It’s a small issue and, on the plus side, the power button is perfectly placed for easy access.

The flappy plastic covers that keep the ports dry are a necessary evil and one we’d happily live with for the IP55 and IP58 dust and waterproofing benefits they provide. This means the Z1 Compact is dustproof and can be dunked in water without dying. Youll hardly ever need to open the microSD and SIM, but the power socket will get regular exercise.

The 3.5mm headphone jack at the top is open, meaning you can plug in headphones without any messing around with flaps. The speaker grille sits on the bottom of the Xperia Z1 Compact, which also has a wrist-strap hole.

It’s a tried-and-tested design that works well – the only thing that breaks the sleek lines is a proprietary charging port in the middle of the left hand edge, for use with a charging dock accessory (not included). On the Xperia Z1 this felt a little awkward, but the smaller size of this phone means it’s not as much of an issue. Another bonus of the design is that there is enough of a flat surface to balance the phone on its side, although not if you also want to be charging it at the same time.

While you would quite rightly expect the Z1 Compact to be a small phone, it’s not quite as small as the name implies. At 127 x 64.9 x 9.5 mm the Xperia Z1 Compact is a lot smaller than the thumb-cramping 144 x 74 x 8.5 mm Z1. But it is slightly thicker too.

It’s also not that slim or light when compared to other 5-inch Androids like the Galaxy S4 and Nexus 5 either, which, while several millimetres taller and wider, actually weigh 10g less than the 140g Xperia Z1 Compact.

So what’s the benefit of having a smaller screen if the phone isnt all that much smaller or lighter?

The biggest plus is that it’s easy to reach every area of the screen. Juggling a phone with one hand to try and reach the back browser button, all the while being crushed between sweaty commuters, is an experience we have had once too often with a 5-inch phone. The smaller size of the Compact and its ergonomic design means that it’s much easier to handle.

Trying to fit a big screen into as small a frame as possible comes with its own set of issues. The tiny bezels on some phones mean you occasionally touch an area of the screen by accident, making the rest of it unresponsive. You won’t have any such problems with the Z1 Compact as it comes with particularly chunky 6mm border from screen to phone’s edge. We would prefer a thinner bezel, but the 4.3-inch screen size means it’s not as much of an issue as it would be on larger-screened phones like the Z1.

There are the two new colours that the Z1 Compact comes in: lime and pink. Both are surprisingly tasteful, helped by the lightly coloured shaved aluminium edges of the frame. The other colours are black and white – similar to the Z1 but with a slightly darker frame.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: Screen and speakers

There is one spec area, aside from screen size, where the Xperia Z1 Compact loses out to its bigger brother. The 4.3-inch screen has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, where the Xperia  Z1 is Full HD. The Z1 Compact screen has 341 pixels per inch. That’s 100 less than the Full HD Z1, but actually a little more than the iPhone 5Ss 326ppi.

However, we’re not playing tech Top Trumps here – what we look for is the experience the screen provides. The Xperia Z1 Compact’s screen is excellent, and its resolution perfectly suited to the 4.3-inch display size.

It will take very keen eyes to be bothered by any lack of clarity or sharpness. Only when fully zoomed out will you notice that tiny website text is not quite as clear as it is the Xperia Z1 Compact’s Full HD competitors. Sonys improvements to image quality and black level are much more noticeable than any lack of sharpness. The Xperia Z1 Compact doesn’t suffer from many of the screen issues we noticed while reviewing the Z1, either.

The decades Sony has spent crafting TVs mean that it knows or thing or two about image quality and display technology. It’s quite apparent that this knowledge is trickling into phone screens, as the colours are deep and accurate while the brightness is solid.

Sony claims its Triluminos display technology provides a larger colour palette than on competitor phones. This is a bold claim, but a solid one this time around. Colours are visibly more accurate and deeper than the iPhone 5Ss and we found watching movies and TV programs on it a pleasure. On the flip side the Xperia Z1 Compact is not quite as bright as the most dazzling phones, but it’s still bright enough to see in strong daylight. Whites also are not quite perfect, but the better colours and blacks are a trade-off we’d take any day.

Phones are individual devices so viewing angles aren’t as important as they are on other products like tablets or laptops, however we’re pleased to note these are also significantly improved over the Z1.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: Performance and apps

The Xperia Z1 Compact uses the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU. This is a processor we’ve had plenty of experience with and it is plenty fast for the vast majority of users.

You’ll not experience any significant slow-down or delay in opening apps, and moving through menus is zippy. Games look great and run superbly too. Real Racing 3 plays like a dream and the excellent colour reproduction shows off the cars in all their sun-drenched glory.

The Z1 Compact zooms past phones like the HTC One Mini and is the fastest Android we’ve ever tested, as of February 2014. It is even faster than the iPhone 5S in some tests. Whether its down to software massaging of the score or better memory management, the scores of 2,836 for Geekbench 3 and 19,012 for 3D Mark’s Ice Storm Unlimited are almost 10 per cent faster than the Z1. Itll soon be topped once Snapdragon 805 phones surface, though, possibly by the end of the month.

The Xperia Z1 Compact is as fast as you can get at present, but all that power comes with a minor problem. The Compact gets hot under stress. Not ridiculously hot like the Xperia Z, released a few years ago, but it gets a little more toasty than we like when playing games or watching video. Sony has been clever, though. It has placed the processor at the centre of the back of the phone meaning most of the heat dissipates without making your hands too warm, or your ears burn when you take a call.

Unlike Samsung and HTC, Sony chooses to only apply light touches to the Android 4.3 operating system on the Xperia Z1 Compact. This means performance isn’t affected by software detritus and you get most of the 16GB of on-board storage to use as you wish. Add to that a microSD slot that takes cards up to 64GB and you’re able to keep oodles of music and TV on the Z1 Compact.

However, the internal speaker is not great. While loud enough at max power, audio lacks clarity when compared to the HTC One or iPhone 5S.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: Camera

The Xperia Z1 Compacts camera sounds like a corker. A 20.7-megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor should beat the competition - bar the Nokia Lumia 1020 - hands down. Unfortunately, just like the Xperia Z1, it is slightly disappointing.

The Xperia Z1 Compact is automatically set to take photos using an intelligent auto setting at eight megapixels, which seems odd considering it has an extra twelve-odd in reserve. The reasons for this become clear when you take pictures in manual 20.7-megapixel mode.

Photos at maximum resolution lack clarity, sharpness and definition. This is surprising considering the megapixel count. Low-light shots are extremely dark and noisy when shooting at full-res too. It’s a predictable result of packing so many pixels into such a tiny sensor but it’s disappointing that images are distinctly worse than the lower resolution Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5S.

Use the 8-megapixel intelligent auto function, however, and things get much better. Colour accuracy and sharpness of photos taken in good light are significantly improved when compared to the murky manual mode.

Some hefty photo post-processing leads to incredibly bright low-light shots – so incredible that I had to check twice to ensure I hadn’t left the flash on. Impressive detail levels are captured considering the darkness of the room but it is evident that the image is not particularly true to the conditions it was taken in. The colour of the tangerine is too orange, and its edges are very fuzzy. By comparison the same shot taken with an iPhone 5S looks more true to life. In a dimly lit pub, however, you may well prefer the increased detail and brightness so this is more a matter of taste.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact can also take Full HD video. Focusing and movement capture is good although videos come out a little darker than we’d like. You won’t be taking any amazing selfies, but the 2-megapixel front camera is perfectly adequate for video calling.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: Battery life

The Xperia Z1 Compact Sony is about 1mm thicker than the Z1, but we easily forgive the extra bit of bulk when it lets the phone pack-in a decent 2300MAh battery.

That’s a smaller battery than the Z1s, but the smaller, lower-res screen offsets the difference. Its the same-size battery as the 5-inch Full HD Nexus 5, and manages to last a good deal longer than that phone.

We easily managed a heavy day of use (excluding gaming) with battery saving mode on and still went home in the evening with more than 20 per cent to spare. Usage included two hours of 3G browsing, several hours of GPS navigation, 50 photos taken, an hour of calls, texts and two hours of watching on-device video all on 75 per cent brightness. Used more sparingly we managed to get almost two days of use from it. It offers impressive stamina.

While a 30 minute blast adds 25 per cent of battery life from empty there is a note of caution – if you decide to live on the edge and turn Stamina Mode off and play a couple of hours of a 3D game you’ll struggle to last a full day.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: Call and signal quality

The Z1 Compacts call quality is excellent. You can hear the person on the other end of the line, and they you, as clear as a bell, even when on a noisy train or walking down a windy main road. It uses a second noise cancelling mic to help out in situations like this.

Wi-Fi signal is also strong, but we did notice that signal was randomly dropped on occasion even when we were not mobile. This only lasts for a few seconds and never occurred during a call but did while 3G browsing a few times.

Should I buy the Xperia Z1 Compact?

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is the best small Android phone on the market. It’s also one of the best Android phones, full stop.

If you find 5-inch phones a bit of a handful, the Compact will be right up your street. It is superbly designed, has an excellent screen, stonking performance and even a memory card slot. It also comes with one of the most impressive party pieces any phone has to offer – it’s waterproof to 1.5m. Add that it costs a reasonable £430 (as much as £120 less than its 5-inch brother) and you have a very compelling proposition indeed.

If a Full HD 5-inch phone is a must, consider the Nexus 5 for £130 less or the older Galaxy S4 for around the same price. Both have a less impressive processor and, in the case of the Nexus 5, an inferior camera and no microSD.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: Verdict

It’s not the smallest or lightest phone on the market but it exudes quality and class in every area. In the Xperia Z1 Compact Sony has created a truly mighty mini.

HTC One Android 4 4 KitKat update to launch next week

Following much talk, HTC has confirmed that the eagerly awaited HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update will start being rolled out from next week.

While the Taiwanese manufacturer has confirmed that the HTC One KitKat update will be made available for unlocked handset owners in the US within a matter of days, the company has yet to detail when UK residents can expect the software patch.

“HTC One owners, final KitKat software has entered carrier labs for final testing and expect certification next week,” the company announced via its official Twitter feed.

Far from a surprise release, 84 days ago the manufacturer announced that the HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update would be rolled out within 90 days, a promise that has ensured next week will see the software introduced.

While HTC continues to update its current flagship phone, attention has already turned to the company’s next-generation handset.

Recent HTC One 2 rumours have claimed that the second-generation device will be officially unveiled next month, in the days leading up to MWC 2014.

As well as boasting a further refined metal-hewn body, the HTC One 2, also doing the rounds under the moniker of the HTC M8, will be upgraded to a 5-inch, 1080p Full HD display, Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and the Android 4.4 KitKat OS as standard.

How To Root Sony Xperia Z Easily

Sony Xperia Z is the most popular handset of Sony and also it has amazing specifications. But today, I am showing you a guide to boost your Sony Xperia Z by 2x. But how can you do this? By Rooting!

Xperia Z is featured and stuffed with tons of features like 1.5 GHz Krait processor which is a Quad-Core chipset so I am sure that the device doesnt lag much. Also it has got a 5 inch TFT Capacitive Touch Screen, exploited by Sony Bravia Engine 2 and xLoud. Not only this much, the device has many tweaks that are really very cool which improves the device display, camera quality, better and clear speaker. It comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as Stock Android but has received Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update and some other updates too. However you can update your Sony Xperia Z to Android 4.4 KitKat by CyanogenMod 11 ROM which is made by FXP (Free Xperia Project) developer @XDA. But wait, what did you just say? KitKat? Yeah, I said KitKat! But how to do that? You need to root your handset!
The guide is pretty easy and you need not unlock your bootloader and just one click to root! There are many guides which require unlocking bootloader and unlocking bootloader is just work of 5 minutes but it voids the warranty and you also need internet to do so. In this guide you dont need internet, you need it for just two times, one for following this article and second to download OneClickRoot which will root your Android device easily in just some seconds. Lets no more talk about ease and and all and move to our main part of the guide that is How To Root Sony Xperia Z.

Downloads and Requirements

  • Charged Sony Xperia Z upto 70% or more.
  • Xperia Z with USB Debugging enabled [Go to seconds, follow to Developer options and enable USB Debugging from there.]
  • Xperia Zs drivers installed in your PC.
  • One Click Root application: Click here to download it from their official website.
How To Root Sony Xperia Z
  • First of all, connect your Sony Xperia Z with your PC by USB and also make sure USB Debugging is enabled with drivers installed.
  • Download One Click Root and install it on your PC. Its simple installation guide. Just click next, next and you are done with it.
  • Open One Click Root on your PC and click on that big Green Root button that is on the Mid-Bottom left side.
  • It will open a popup and will display Sony Xperia Z in it, just click on it. It is to make sure that you want to root this device only or not.
  • It will start rooting process and your phone will root twice or thrice in this process.
  • You are done with it now. When the device will reboot last time, then it is rooted!
Open your application drawer and swipe it right or left to check the new application superuser. If the application is installed in your Xperia Z, then you are rooted. Also you can cross-check if it is rooted or not by using Root Checker application. This application is 100% free and you dont need to pay for it. If the results are positive then you are rooted if it fails then you might not have installed your drivers properly or something else went wrong. Just try it again if you failed but you are sure that drivers are working.

Store your stuff for free how to make the most of free cloud storage

It seems that if a new product hasnt had the term cloud simply crowbarred into its marketing bumf, the entire production team is set to create its own stream of personalised precipitation when it gets its marching orders.

All good board of directors know their latest product has to be in the cloud, otherwise why would anyone use it? As it is, their pulsar-dense level of thundering stupidity is our gain.

While every man and his start-up are piling free cloud storage in with their app, phone, tablet, computer, service and kitchen sink, we can benefit by taking time out to hoover up this free online storage. See, online is a perfectly good word for it, plus it takes us back to the days when AOL used to send out discs.

From just rough calculations of the services on offer, you could easily net yourself over 70GB of general internet storage. Were not even talking a huge number of services either; targeting the top eight should easily net you that much, while a little more work could almost quadruple that amount.

"Fine, but how are you suppose to combine that into an easily usable lump?" we hear you cry. Thats exactly why were here. Were going to look at the various storage services that are being offered, which are best for your needs and how you can more easily access them as a whole. Alongside that, well look at how you can maximise your free cloud storage, too.

Before we begin, an important point to note about cloud storage systems is that theres a distinction between general and specific-service storage. While DropBox only offers 2GB of general-purpose storage, an image service such as Flickr is happy to provide 500 times that, with 1TB for your photos and videos. So lets see how we can snap up terabytes of free storage.

Despite our moaning, every marketing cloud has a silver lining - in this case, free space. With broadband download speeds heading towards the sort of pace youd expect from a slower USB thumb drive, its not an outrageous statement to say you could start using online storage for generalised low-speed, long-term storage and backup. So just how much cloud storage can you snag?

It depends how determined you are to snaffle every gigabyte available and how open-minded you are to exactly what you define as storage. Even for the lazy, its an easy to job to grab at least 50GB. If youre looking for a quick and dirty solution, heading over to www.mega.co.nz and creating an account bestows you with 50GB of storage and very few limitations. In fact, there are no file size or bandwidth limits at all. Itll resume upload and downloads, and includes mobile access. The only real restriction is only a single transfer is possible per tab. It doesnt offer device synchronisation currently, but thats supposedly coming in a future update to the service.

Two words of warning, though: firstly theres no password recovery system, so if you lose it you can wave goodbye to your data, and secondly this service is run by notorious Kim Dotcom, so who knows if itll be busted by the FBI.

Clumping clouds

Over on Wikipedia theres a useful curated list of storage services. By our maths, if you take out accounts for most of them, you could get yourself over 330GB of free space. With a few tricks you could boost this by a further 100GB. This next point might be stretching things a little, as we realise theres a big difference between general storage and specialist-service storage.

Take Flickr, for example - its happy to give you 1TB of space, for free to store your photos, but not those oddly-named MKV files of yours. Similarly, Google Music offers space to store 20,000 MP3 tracks for free. Each track can be up to 128MB, so thats technically a ludicrous 2.4TB of storage for your music, just waiting to be claimed.

We could even claim that Google+ offers infinite storage for sub-4MP photos and sub-30-minute 1080p videos, but even we know thats going a little too far. So before weve even got through the door were looking at 3.4TB of free specific online storage. Thats enough to use as a decent backup space for your media files, but lets find out what more we can do.

Starting small

Rather unimaginatively, were going to begin by looking at Dropbox. Were starting here for several reasons, the first of which is that its a damn good online storage service. Beyond the obvious, it offers multi-device file synchronisation, a basic 2GB of free starting storage, mobile app access and a number of innovative ways to boost your free storage.

In many ways were interested in that last point, as were all about the free storage and many of these cloud services offer you ways to boost your base free storage by doing simple tasks. For example, while the base free storage for Dropbox is 2GB, itll give you an extra 250MB just for following its introductory guide. Another 625MB can be gained from linking to Twitter and Facebook, plus following the Dropbox social accounts and firing off a spam tweet for them.

The best free gig is to use the camera upload feature in the mobile Dropbox app; you get 500MB of free storage for every 500MB of images you upload, up to 3GB. All of those combined make it easy to snag 5GB of free Dropbox storage.

Friend referrals are another spacemaker; for every person who installs on a referral youll get another 500MB free, up to 16GB. That brings your total free storage to 21GB or so.

Cloud seeding

As you might have noticed, this referral gig can be quite lucrative if you have gullible - sorry, gracious friends who are willing to help out.

So what other storage sites have decent referral schemes on offer? MediaFire is an excellent choice, offering 10GB to start and 1GB for each referral up to 32G. It also offers 2GB for installing the desktop tools and 2GB of the mobile app, alongside 1GB bonuses each for Twitter, Facebook and social mentions.

Just working with referrals, MiMedia gives you 7GB base storage with 1GB for each referral up to 5GB.

SugarSync is a pretty cool service in itself, as it adds its cloud storage as a mapped drive letter on your system. It gives you 5GB as a free account anyway, with up to 32GB via referrals in 500MB chunks.

Similarly, Ubuntu One provides 5GB free, with 500MB for each referral up to 20GB.

Its also worth keeping an eye open for offers, too. Over recent years manufacturers such as HP, HTC and Samsung have bundled enhanced cloud storage packages with their devices. And these have been as generous as 50GB with the HP Touchpad and some Samsung tablets. HTC has also offered 25GB with some phones, though often these offers are limited to a years subscription. Weve also seen Box.net give away 25GB and 50GB worth of space on Facebook. We havent seen one of these offers since February, but it could be worth following, just in case.

At this point, with Mega, a free Box.net 50GB bonus and referrals in full swing, you could be packing 247GB without really breaking into a sweat. Add to this little lot a generally standard 15GB of Google Drive/Gmail storage, 7GB of Microsoft SkyDrive and 5GB of Amazon Cloud (after all, you probably already have an Amazon account), and youre looking at 274GB of total cloud storage. Even ignoring the potentially dubious referrals, thats 169GB for the taking.

Joli rancher

Now that youve got a basket full of cloud storage, whats the best way to manage and access it all without going nuts? First, let us point you in the direction of www.jolicloud.com, an incredibly neat all-in-one cloud manager. It isnt a cloud consolidating system - all the services remain separated and youre unable to move files, images or anything else between them. What Jolicloud does is give all of your most-used social networks and cloud storage one pretty damn slick web interface, which you can access from anywhere.

If you happen to also use a password manager such as LastPass - the benefits of weve bored you with previously - the setup process takes just a minute, even with a long list of cloud service and social networks.

Its nothing more complex than selecting the services icon from the list of supported ones, entering your username and password then enabling access for Jolic m8loud. You can even create an account via Facebook or Google+, which makes registration a one-click process.

So Jolicloud puts all your cloud services and social networks in one place for easy perusing, but nothing beyond that; they remain separate services. How can you clump these lumps of cloud storage together to make life easier?

One solution is Otixo - a browser and app-based collaboration and cloud consolidation service. Its a paid-for service; the web version is available for a one-off fee of $39.99 for a limited time, but once thats gone its $9.99 per month.

Otixo does a number of clever tricks. It enables you to add multiple cloud services and access them from a single login. Unlike Jolicloud, it then enables you to search and view files across all of the services. You can also copy and move files between cloud storage, and upload files directly to any of your online accounts.

Setting up Otixo doesnt take long; youll need to register for an account, but once thats done, adding most service accounts is just a matter of entering the username and password, then authorising access.

One of Otixos most interesting features is its ability to organise collaborative projects. This works best if everyone involved has an Otixo account, but thats not essential. Once youve created a project, you can add files from any of your accounts and share the Space with selected collaborators. The Space logs changes and comments made, and any changes to documents are also made to the original file. The monthly fee and collaborative elements make Otixo most suitable for business use and academic projects, but if youre a power cloud user it could certainly be of interest.

If youre looking for a free alternative to Otixo, Primadesk offers a free account that is limited to adding 10 linked services. Even then the full paid-for service is just $50 for a year, offers unlimited linked services and provides an additional 10GB of storage too.

Why the additional storage? One service that Primadesk offers is cloud backup of your cloud backup. Its straightforward enough - just select the folders you want to copy and itll do the rest. It might sound overkill to you, but its a potentially life-saving service thats not well catered for, offering a lifeline if another service is cut off.

Otherwise its very much like Otixo, albeit perhaps not as slick. You can easily drag and drop files and folders between services. If you want to edit a file, a double-click takes you to the original services editing page, but theres no preview feature. Usefully the search is cross-service, and can index the contents of files too. For a free service its well worth taking the time to check out.

Little fluffy clouds

Its unlikely that youre going to run after every gigabyte of free storage, but part of the point here is that even with the basic services (Dropbox, Google Drive and Skydrive), youre likely to have upwards of 30GB of free cloud storage available. Its also likely that the files stored here will become somewhat muddled and accessing all the systems will be a pain.

Primadesk provides a single login for most (if not all) of your cloud storage services. With space for 20,000 tracks, which you can stream from anywhere, Google Music is a prime example of an excellent service that gives you terabytes of free storage.

If youre looking for something that covers all of your media, check out QVIVO. Its a paid-for streaming media service, but it offers unlimited storage and streaming for HD video and audio to your desktop for just $1.99 per month (or $2.99 for use with mobile devices).

One of the drawbacks of online storage is the time it takes to upload your files, so running a home server puts you in a better position. You probably have most or all of your media and backup files stored on a server already, so you wont have to scramble around trying to gather all of your files in one easy hub.
