No iPad Pro or iPad mini 3 expected in 2014 as iPad Air is tipped for update
Apple’s annual iPad updates look set to be pretty lean this year, with latest reports suggesting that while an iPad Air refresh is on the cards, no iPad Pro or iPad mini 3 will be released.

Although multiple rumours of a larger, iPad Pro have circulated in recent weeks, industry analysts have now suggested that Apple’s 2014 iPad collection will consist solely of an update to the 9.7-inch iPad Air.
Speaking in a note to investors, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that claims of an iPad Pro launch will not be fulfilled this year, with Apple unlikely to launch a 12.9-inch tablet to rival the CES introduced Samsung Galaxy Note Pro.
Claiming Apple will focus its development efforts elsewhere, Kuo offered a bit of wiggle room, stating: “Even if it (a larger iPad) does make an appearance this year, shipments will be low.”
Despite the success of the iPad mini, and subsequent iPad mini 2 which launched last November with a new Retina display in tow, it has been claimed that Apple will not launch a third-generation 7.9-inch tablet this year.
While consumers will have to make do with the iPad mini 2 for a further 12 months at least, serial Apple tipster Kuo has claimed the iPad Air will receive a specs bump this autumn.
Targeting two easy areas of improvement, the analyst has claimed that the iPad Air will be upgraded to a new A8 processor and introduce the TouchID fingerprint sensor incorporating home button found on the iPhone 5S.
According to Kuo’s insiders, Apple’s reduced tablet efforts are being forced by the company’s push to finalise Apple iWatch hardware and software for launch later in the year.
He added that “unless more aggressive promotions are launched,” a lack of new models will see annual iPad sales drop for the first time.

New Samsung Windows Phone tipped for imminent release
While much attention is being focused on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 release date, latest reports have suggested Samsung is set to launch a new Windows Phone powered handset.

With Samsung has remained a bit part player on the Windows Phone scene as Nokia continues as the market’s leading force, new reports have claimed that the Korean manufacturer has a new WP8 powered device in the works, one that could take a number of pointers from the Samsung Galaxy S4.
According to the Twitter-based serial tech tipster @evleaks, the new Samsung Windows Phone handset will be unveiled shortly, with a US network having already teased the device.
“Samsung SM-W750V will be a Windows Phone on Verizon. Codenamed Huron, it looks very similar to a late model Galaxy S,” an @evleaks Tweet teased.
Although Samsung has as yet failed to offer any indications as to if or when it will renew its Windows Phone efforts, with MWC 2014 less than three weeks away, the mobile show looks like a likely launch venue for the company’s new phone.
While specs for the company’s new Windows Phone handset still remain shrouded in mystery, it is believed that the Samsung Galaxy S4 influenced handset could boast a similar array of innards to the former flagship phone, just with a newer Snapdragon 800 CPU in tow in a bid to better rival the latest models.
With a 5-inch Full HD display one of many S4 features expected to be brought across to the Samsung SM-W750V Windows Phone device, a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera and 2GB of RAM have also been tipped for inclusion.

Red Google Nexus 5 release date tipped for February 4
A red Google Nexus 5 release date has been tipped for next week as the repeatedly leaked handset gets set for a February 4 launch.

With the red Google Nexus 5 having been the subject of numerous leaks and countless rumours in recent weeks, now retailer stocking details have made a premature appearance, with the handset tipped to go on sale next Tuesday, February 4, in the US at least.
“2/4/14: Google Nexus 5 in red available in Google Play stores,” US network provider Sprint has stated in an internal document which has made its way online.
Although Google has as yet failed to formally confirm the existence of a new vibrantly hued Nexus 5 handset, it is widely believed that the repeatedly rumoured red model will be the first of a range of newly coloured smartphones to join the original black and white handsets.
Aside from the colour difference, the red Google Nexus 5 is believed to be identical to its monochrome counterparts, with a 5-inch, 1080p Full HD display, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM.
Powered by the company’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, the Google Nexus 5 boasts an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera alongside a 1.3-megapixel secondary snapper and the option of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage.

LG G3 release date tipped for May 17
The LG G3 release date has been tipped for May 17, but we doubt this will be anywhere near the real launch.

We don’t doubt that LG is already working on the LG G2 successor, but the idea it may launch as early as May 17 is a little farfetched.
The alleged release date comes from reports in the Korean media, scheduling a LG G3 launch just nine months after the September LG G2 release date, which seems rather unlikely.
Something else that puts the kibosh on a May 17 release date for the LG G3 is the fact the date falls on a Saturday, a very unusual day for a company to launch a flagship device.
However, the rumoured LG G3 specs may be a little closer to the truth, and suggest the handset will be a direct rival for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5.
Leaked specs tip the LG G3 to come with a 5.5-inch 2,560 x 1,440p 2K resolution display and run on LG’s own Odin processor rather than the Qualcomm alternatives.
It could also feature a 16-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilisation. We expect LG may even retain the LG G2’s trademark rear buttons for the LG G3 when it eventually launches later this year.
The Korean media sources also suggested LG could launch the LG G Pro 2 phablet at MWC 2014, complete with a 5.9-inch QHD resolution display.
As usual, we advise you take the above information with a rather large dollop of salt as it would be very unusual for LG to deviate from its annual launch cycle, unless it intends to compete more directly with HTC and Samsung.

Panasonic tipped to launch rugged smartphone at MWC 2014
Panasonic is reportedly preparing to re-enter the smartphone market with a rugged handset at MWC 2014.

The last phone Panasonic launched was the Panasonic Eluga at MWC 2012 – a waterproof mobile that really didn’t do very well at all.
In fact, the Eluga was such a disaster, Panasonic pulled out of the smartphone market completely in 2013.
However, MWC 2014 could be where it makes its smartphone comeback with a rugged, shock proof handset.
According to Japanese site, Asahi, Panasonic is preparing a shockproof smartphone for an MWC launch, but didn’t actually received much info about the device.
All we know so far from the unnamed sources is that the mystery device will have a 5-inch screen.
It is suggested that the Panasonic 2014 smartphone will be aimed at construction site workers and other similar users, meaning it may not be aimed at the general mainstream market.
Panasonic is supposedly already in talks with construction companies in the US to form partnerships for the device come launch.
Unfortunately that’s all the information we have so far on Panasonic’s alleged re-entry into the smartphone market.
The device sounds rather niche, so we expect it could potentially follow in the Eluga’s footsteps if Panasonic doesn’t manage to pull off a major partnership.

LG tipped to equip all 2014 flagships with fingerprint scanners

According to a new rumour, LG will not only fit the LG G3 with a fingerprint scanner, but other high-end devices too. LG tipped to equip all 2014 flagships with fingerprint scanners

LG could equip all its 2014 flagships with fingerprint scanners, if the latest information is accurate.
According to a new rumour, LG will not only fit the LG G3 with a fingerprint scanner, but other high-end devices too.
A report from the Korean site, ETNews has suggested the LG G3 and the LG G Pro 2 will feature fingerprint scanners similar to that of the iPhone 5S.
Other devices like the HTC One Max have implemented fingerprint scanners, but they haven’t been quite as successful, accurate or well-placed as Apple’s Touch ID sensor embedded in the iPhone 5S home button.
We wonder whether LG will choose to embed the fingerprint sensor within the rear buttons introduced with the LG G2.
“Rather than to simply apply fingerprint recognition functionality, it is important to improve security and user convenience at the same time,” said the LG Electronics insider. “We will give prominence to our functional differentiations in order not to suffer the disgrace of being called a mimicker to follow what the competitors do.”
The insider suggests LG will apply fingerprint sensors to “four – five premium models including the two this year”.
LG will have to compete with the fingerprint sensor technology potentially included with the Samsung Galaxy S5 as well as whatever Apple pulls out of the bag with the iPhone 6.
The latest rumour is that the Galaxy S5 will feature a fingerprint sensor under the screen.
“To improve its presence in the premium smartphone market, LG Electronics needs to apply innovative functions, such as optical image stabilising (OIS), fingerprint recognition, to its smartphones ahead of its competitors,” said a stock market analyst. “Attention is drawn to how LG Electronics will use fingerprint recognition functionality, which has become rather stale, in differentiating its products.”

Moto X tipped for July 11 launch date
The Moto X Phone has been tipped for a July 11 launch date, according to one technology broadcaster.

Leo Laporte, an award-winning American tech broadcaster and author, has said he has been invited to a Motorola event on July 10 and 11.
Invited by a new Motorola employee called Guy Kawasaki, Laporte said what is being featured at the event is still being kept quiet, but will only be for selected tech journalists.
Rumours surrounding the long-awaited Moto X Phone from Motorola seem to be coming in thick and fast now, especially as the suggest launch day is now just under a week away.
With the Moto X the first significant launch since Google bought Motorola in 2011, many expect the smartphone to be rather special.
However, the latest leaks suggest it won’t be a powerhouse device in terms of specs, but rather focusing on new software technologies.
The Moto X ad campaign that launched this week just prior to the American Independence Day revealed that Motorola is marketing its upcoming Android device as the smartphone “you can design yourself.”
Although no further details have yet been revealed, it is expected that consumers will be able to design their own case, using something like a basic Google Nexus 4 as an outline.
“The first smartphone designed, engineered and assembled in the USA is coming,” reads the Moto X news sign up page. “It’s also the first smartphone that you can design yourself. Because today you should have the freedom to design the things in your life to be as unique as you are.”
Specs-wise the Moto X is tipped to pack a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768p resolution display, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU.
As for a Moto X release date, Motorola has only given the rather frustrating “coming soon”, but we expect that further details, including the device’s new software, will be revealed on July 11.

Office for iPad apps tipped for imminent release
Microsoft finally looks set to embrace Apple’s market-leading tablets, with Office for iPad apps tipped for an imminent release.

Following more than a year of will they, won’t they back and forth, latest reports from well-informed tipsters have claimed that an Office for iPad launch could now be just a matter of months away.
Surprisingly, however, it has been suggested that Microsoft will bring its Office services to iPad before the software package is rolled out for its own, Windows 8.1-powered tablet collection.
According to ZDNet’s renowned Microsoft tipster Mary Jo Foley, outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has approved an Office for iPad release, with the tablet-based software reportedly set for a pre-July launch. Despite having pioneered its own tablet-based platform, Microsoft will reportedly introduce Office for iPad prior to rolling out a touchscreen-friendly Windows 8.1 version of the productivity software later in the year.
“As you might expect, Microsoft officials are declining to comment on anything having to do with Office on iPad but don’t believe the naysayers,” Foley stated.
She teasingly added: “Office for iPad is coming. And sooner than many think.”
While Foley’s sources have hinted that an Office for iPad release will be with us before the year’s midway point, Microsoft itself has teased that it could soon embrace Apple’s tablet line that is spearheaded by the new iPad Air and iPad Mini 2.
“As we step back and say, these core applications, these core brands that are so important to enterprise customers and consumers, how do we make sure that we’re thoughtful about what we’re doing on the Windows platform, as well as cognizant of the fact that there’s other devices in their lives,” Microsoft’s Marketing Chief Tami Reller said.
“So you’ll see us be thoughtful about how and when we bring what applications to what platforms.”
