Sapphire crystal displays slammed ahead of iPhone 6 launch
Apple is looking increasingly more likely to employ sapphire crystal screen technology on the rumoured iPhone 6, and that appears to be rubbing the current leader in mobile glass up the wrong way.
Tony Tripeny, executive at Corning (maker of the popular Gorilla Glass which adorns many smartphones), wasted no time highlighting sapphires disadvantages during a Morgan Stanley Technology conference.
Tripeny raised several points surrounding the negative aspect of sapphire technology, "its about 10 times more expensive [than Gorilla Glass]. Its about 1.6 times heavier. Its environmentally unfriendly."
There are also concerns about sapphires opacity, which could potentially make the screen harder to view and Tripeny noted "it transmits less light which... means either dimmer devices or shorter battery life."
Coring reckons that its Gorilla Glass offering can also withstand more pressure than the sapphire equivalent - "about 2.5 times more pressure" in fact, although we cant put this claim to the test at the moment.
Apple will be aware of the issues surrounding sapphire glass as its already used it to cover the TouchID sensor on the iPhone 5S and protect the lens on the iPhone 5, 5C and 5S.
The iPhone 6 is expected to arrive later this year so well have to wait and see if sapphire is the screen of choice for the Cupertino firm and whether itll push the price of the handset up.

Flappy Bird Windows Phone app to launch next week
A Flappy Bird Windows Phone app is on the way as developers confirm the latest app-based gaming sensation will spread its wings away from its iOS and Android foundations next week.

An infuriatingly addictive side scrolling game in which players are tasked with guiding a tiny bird through a collection of narrow gaps made up of Mario-inspired green pipes by flapping its wings, Flappy Bird has become an iOS and Android chart topper in recent weeks and is now Windows Phonebound.
Making the announcement on Twitter over the weekend, Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyen revealed that the game will hit Microsoft’s mobile OS shortly, with a February 11 launch mooted.
“I could estimate 10 days from now,” Nguyen said on February 1 when questioned when a Flappy Bird Windows Phone launch would be held. He added: “It has to be approved by Microsoft.”
A free to download game, Flappy Bird features retro-style, pixelated graphics and slightly clunky touch controls, both of which make the simple game all the more endearing.
As well as targeting four individual progress medals, bronze, silver, gold and platinum, Flappy Bird lets users measure their personal high-scores against friends and the wider Flappy Bird community.

Google Nexus 8 launch scheduled for mid 2014
The Google Nexus 8 has been tipped to launch later this year by upstream supply chain sources.

Google could launch an 8-inch Nexus tablet in the middle of this year in order to break free of the rammed 7-inch tablet market.
According to DigiTimes sources, Google has seen demand for the Google Nexus 7 2 impacted by the vast amount of competing 7-inch tablets on the market.
Due to this, Google is looking to focus on 8-inch alternatives for 2014, or so say sources from “the upstream supply chain”.
The original Nexus 7’s six million unit shipments has not been matched by the second-generation 7-inch Nexus tablet, so Google will launch the Nexus 8 to match the offering from Apple’s iPad mini 2 Retina display.
Apparently, Google has already partnered with Intel for the Nexus 8, which will therefore adopt an Intel Bay Trail processor. Of course, Qualcomm is rumoured to be trying to squash the deal.
Google’s Research and Development partner is tipped to be Asustek Computer, which is already responsible for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 7 2013.
The sources also suggest there will be more information surround the Google Nexus 8 in February, so we’ll keep you posted.
The Nexus 7 2 currently offers a 7-inch 1920 x 1200p Full HD display with a 323ppi image density protected by Corning glass.
Running on a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, it has 2GB of RAM alongside the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and 4G connectivity.
It has a 5-megapixel camera in the rear and 1.2-megapixels in the front for video calling.
Panasonic tipped to launch rugged smartphone at MWC 2014
Panasonic is reportedly preparing to re-enter the smartphone market with a rugged handset at MWC 2014.

The last phone Panasonic launched was the Panasonic Eluga at MWC 2012 – a waterproof mobile that really didn’t do very well at all.
In fact, the Eluga was such a disaster, Panasonic pulled out of the smartphone market completely in 2013.
However, MWC 2014 could be where it makes its smartphone comeback with a rugged, shock proof handset.
According to Japanese site, Asahi, Panasonic is preparing a shockproof smartphone for an MWC launch, but didn’t actually received much info about the device.
All we know so far from the unnamed sources is that the mystery device will have a 5-inch screen.
It is suggested that the Panasonic 2014 smartphone will be aimed at construction site workers and other similar users, meaning it may not be aimed at the general mainstream market.
Panasonic is supposedly already in talks with construction companies in the US to form partnerships for the device come launch.
Unfortunately that’s all the information we have so far on Panasonic’s alleged re-entry into the smartphone market.
The device sounds rather niche, so we expect it could potentially follow in the Eluga’s footsteps if Panasonic doesn’t manage to pull off a major partnership.
Sony Xperia G mid range device leaked ahead of potential MWC launch
The Sony Xperia G mid-range smartphone has been leaked online ahead of a potential MWC launch.
According to a tweet from prolific tech tipster @vizileaks, the Sony Xperia G will be the mid-range device to launch at MWC alongside the high-end Sony Xperia Z2.
The Xperia G has been spotted before in leaked benchmarks with specs very similar to the Motorola Moto G.
From the leaked photograph, the Sony Xperia G looks to offer a screen size of around 4.6- or 4.8-inches. It is seen with what looks to be the 5-inch Sony Xperia Z1, which makes us believe it has such a screen size.
However, Sony may well have reduced the bezel size of the Xperia G and kitted it out with a 5-inch display.
Of course, the phone on top could be the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact too, meaning that the display may be as small as 4.3-inches or lower, but we sincerely doubt it.
The previously leaked benchmarks suggest the Xperia G will have a 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and run Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.
It is also tipped to feature a 720p HD resolution display, rather than full 1080p HD to keep it in-line with its mid-range price tag.
That’s all we know about the Sony Xperia G for now, but it may well be part of Sony’s MWC 2014 line-up.

Nokia Android phone UI leaked in new images launch date teased
New images of the Nokia Android UI have leaked online, with some suggesting they contain a launch date clue.

As the leaks become more frequent and revealing, it seems ever more likely that the Nokia “Normandy” Android phone will feature at MWC 2014 in January.
The latest Nokia Android UI snaps have arrived courtesy of long-time reliable tipster @evleaks and reveal a lot of information about the heavily rumoured Android smartphone.
“Two ways to interact with Normandy”, reads the tweet.
On the left hand side is what we believe to be two home screens from the Nokia Android phone. The bright, colourful blocks are very reminiscent of the Windows Phone 8 OS that Nokia is obviously trying to based its Android UI.
We expect that the Nokia Android UI will be very heavy, similar to the one used in devices like the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7.
However, on the right hand side is the Nokia Android notification centre, which is split into calendar alerts and other recent app notifications.
From the looks of it you’ll be able to respond to event invites directly from this notifications screen.
These UI images are very similar, but not exactly alike, the Nokia Android smartphone UI pictures leaked earlier this month.
Some have suggested that the latest screengrabs are actually press renders that Nokia will release when it launches the heavily rumoured Normandy smartphone.
If this is true, the calendar listing for Tuesday 25 may well be a hint to a Tuesday, February 25 launch, which would put it directly in the middle of MWC 2014.
Of course, this may be a little farfetched and an attempt to clutch at straws due to the lack of official information, but we hope there is a speck of truth to the rumours.

Alcatel to launch solar powered smartphone within 12 months
Alcatel has confirmed that it will launch a new solar powered smartphone within the next 12 months, with the handset’s sun-loving panel to be built within its screen.

Bringing solar powered portable gadgets in to the modern era, the French phone manufacturer has showcased a concept solar phone that, instead of boasting an ugly light panel on its rear, builds a transparent solar panel within the phone’s touchscreen display.
“A couple of months ago we partnered with a company and said ‘let’s try make a transparent solar panel’,” Dan Dery, Alcatel’s Global Vice President of Marketing told TrustedReviews. “It seemed crazy but now we have a working prototype where we have put solar cells over the touchpanel of a display.”
Discussing the future of the battery-saving technology he added: “We are not going to market with the solar phone quite yet. It is probably going to take us another nine to 12 months in order to make sure that the efficiency of the panel is absolutely fine and the transparency level is ok.
“Today the transparency is not where we want it to be – you can see a slight layer on top – but we are trying to see if we can include this within 12 months.”
With battery life being one of the biggest ongoing concerns for smartphone users, Dery has suggested that the transparent solar panel technology could help revolutionise the market, offering added staying power and reducing the reliance on power connectors.
“If you ask consumers what is there major concern, it is often that they have to carry a charger with them to charge their phone and with LTE coming this is getting worse because the content we enjoy requires more power,” he said.
“The target for the solar phone is that in an indoor environment it should be able to maintain an idol current so your phone battery is not depleting, outdoor under the sun it should charge, those are the targets we have.”
The Alcatel VP added: “We are not too far away from this efficiency but currently not quite there. I think we are the only one in the world to demonstrate that.”
While there are concerns this new technology will add a premium to any handset’s price tag, Dery has reassured that the company’s solar powered phone will not dent your wallet.
“If this would require us to bring the phone to a crazy price we would not do that,” he told us. “Everything is about what we can do for normal consumers, those who are not ready to spend $600 every year for a new phone.”

Moto X tipped for July 11 launch date
The Moto X Phone has been tipped for a July 11 launch date, according to one technology broadcaster.
Leo Laporte, an award-winning American tech broadcaster and author, has said he has been invited to a Motorola event on July 10 and 11.
Invited by a new Motorola employee called Guy Kawasaki, Laporte said what is being featured at the event is still being kept quiet, but will only be for selected tech journalists.
Rumours surrounding the long-awaited Moto X Phone from Motorola seem to be coming in thick and fast now, especially as the suggest launch day is now just under a week away.
With the Moto X the first significant launch since Google bought Motorola in 2011, many expect the smartphone to be rather special.
However, the latest leaks suggest it won’t be a powerhouse device in terms of specs, but rather focusing on new software technologies.
The Moto X ad campaign that launched this week just prior to the American Independence Day revealed that Motorola is marketing its upcoming Android device as the smartphone “you can design yourself.”
Although no further details have yet been revealed, it is expected that consumers will be able to design their own case, using something like a basic Google Nexus 4 as an outline.
“The first smartphone designed, engineered and assembled in the USA is coming,” reads the Moto X news sign up page. “It’s also the first smartphone that you can design yourself. Because today you should have the freedom to design the things in your life to be as unique as you are.”
Specs-wise the Moto X is tipped to pack a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768p resolution display, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU.
As for a Moto X release date, Motorola has only given the rather frustrating “coming soon”, but we expect that further details, including the device’s new software, will be revealed on July 11.

Appearing courtesy of serial tech tipster @Evleaks, the new Google Nexus 10 2014 pictures have surfaced via an anonymous insider source. The snaps have showcased a 10-inch slate that looks set to appear in both black and white colour schemes.
A plastic-bodied tablet with few apparent design features that will set it apart from the crowd, the second-generation Google Nexus 10 tablet will reportedly mimic the original in being manufactured by leading mobile player Samsung.
Tweeting the image of the upcoming tablet, @Evleaks has offered a few sparse details on the Google Nexus 10 2014 specs, including its camera setup and screen type.
“Google Nexus 10 by Samsung: Exynos 5, WQXGA, 3GB/16/32GB, 5MP/3MP, 4.5 [via tip],” the teasing Tweet declared.
While the addition of an Exynos 5 CPU or a 5-megapixel rear-mounted camera are not particularly surprising, the tipped addition of Android 4.5 could see Google quickly move away from its Android 4.4 KitKat branded tie-in.
It is currently unknown if Android 4.5 would be a new iteration of KitKat or a whole new version of the mobile OS in its own right.
It is expected that a Google Nexus 10 2014 model will be officially rolled out towards the end of the year’s first half, a full 12 months after the original 10-inch Google tablet made it to the realms of reality.

Apple reportedly planning launch of own mobile payment system
Apple is said to be working on plans to launch its own mobile payment system, a move that would allow users to purchase goods and services using their Apple ID accounts.

With the Cupertino-based company said to be laying the groundwork for a mobile payment service launch, the Wall Street Journal has claimed that Apple will look to capitalise on the millions of existing iPhone and iPad users that already store their credit card details with the company.
With Apple said to be in discussions with additional technology companies and retailers over the proposed introduction of its mobile payment system, it has been suggested that the account that lets users seamlessly purchase apps, music and books from iTunes could be adapted to pay for in-store items.
If launched, the Apple mobile payment system would see users able to charge high street shopping trips or services such as a car MOT or eye test to their Apple ID account.
Highlighting the company’s high level of intent, it has been reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook has assigned the company’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue to the project.
There is currently no word as to when Apple could be planning to roll out its mobile payment service, or if it will be exclusive to US residents at launch or be on the receiving end of a wider global release.

Mozilla to launch Firefox launcher for Android
Mozilla has announced its plans to launch a Firefox Launcherfor Android phones.

The Firefox Launcher will be an Android homescreen replacement powered by Everything Me and aims to be contextually aware.
It will give you app suggestions for the ones you are most likely to use, collected app smart folders and a smart app search for those you have and similar ones to download and install.
“Firefox Launcher for Android makes it easy to discover the content you want in any moment and is optimized for the way you use your phone”, said Mozilla in a statement. “The app integrates the contextual adaptive app search from EverythingMe with the Firefox for Android Web browser to offer users a personalised and customisable Web experience that is fun and intuitive.”
Mozilla has partnered with EverythingMe and has based the Firefox Launcher software on the company’s own, which is a contextually aware launcher already available on Google Play.
EverythingMe and Mozilla demoed the launcher at the InContext Conference in San Francisco and revealed it will suggest apps according to the time of day too.
Apps suggestions will differ from morning to evening, with the latter including apps for checking out local events to plan your night-time activities.
“We’ll share updates soon as development is finished and we get ready for beta testing”, added Mozilla.

ZTE to launch new Windows 8 tablet
ZTE has teased plans to launch a new Windows 8 tablet, suggesting such a device could be a “good penetration point” into Microsoft’s ecosystem.

Although remaining slightly hesitant on the launch of future Windows Phone handsets, the Chinese manufacturer has revealed that a new Windows 8 tablet could be on the horizon.
“We are watching closely the Windows Phone OS space. Probably tablet is a good penetration point for us,” Waiman Lam, ZTE’s Senior Director of Wireless Devices said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews.
Looking to the company’s future Windows-based plans, Lam stated: “For a phone, though, it depends on what the carriers and the market demand.”
He added: “In the past ZTE already launched a Windows Phone handset but now we see the increasing market share of the Windows phone OS and we are trying to find a smart way to penetrate the Windows Phone scene again.”
Although hinting at a potential Windows 8 tablet launch, ZTE executives have failed to offer any further details on when we can expect the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and Nokia Lumia 2520 rival to be formally unveiled.
ZTE launched an early Windows tablet back in 2012, although the 10-inch ZTE V98 received only a basic rollout, failing to incite much consumer interest.

Alcatel We will launch flexible phones if consumers want them
French smartphone maker Alcatel has stated that it will launch flexible phones similar to the LG G Flex, but only if consumers demand them.

With the affordable phone manufacturer looking to future smartphone technologies, the company has told TrustedReviews that while the flexible phone market is not yet developed enough for it to jump aboard, it would consider producing bendy phones if the public demanded them.
“If curve displays or flexible displays become something that is a really desired by consumers, and we see real consumer benefits then we will go there,” Dan Dery, Alcatel’s Global Vice President of Market told us.
Although flexible phones are on the company’s radar, Dery believes there are improvements elsewhere that are currently more important.
“I feel we have a more lot of things to do in innovation before we do flexible,” he said.
“I have nothing against the curved display but I still struggle to see what it does for consumers except that you can’t put it in your pocket anymore.”
Late last year the LG G Flex became the world’s first flexible phone, with the vertically curved handset boasting a malleable display and body that could be flattened or curved by applying relatively forceful amounts of pressure.
Originally landing as a South Korean exclusive, the LG G Flex is now UK-bound, with the futuristic phone having already been made available for pre-order on British shores alongside a near £700 price tag.

Nokia Android phone rumoured to be called Nokia X at launch

According to notorious tipster @evleaks, the first Nokia Android phone will come to market named the Nokia X.
Currently, rumours suggest it is in development under the codename, Normandy, and could launch as soon as MWC 2014 in February.
"Project Normandy = Nokia X", read the brief @evleaks tweet.
However, it could well be unveiled after Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia mobile division is complete some time in Q1 2014.
We’ve heard a lot about the Nokia X in recent weeks, including seeing several leaked press shots of the colourful range of Android phones.
From what we’ve seen so far, the Nokia X will look a lot like the Nokia Lumia range and offer a heavily customised Android UI with strong Windows Phone influences.
However, it will benefit from Android features like a notifications centre and access to the wealth of apps on the Google Play Store.
The recent leaks also tip that Nokia may use a single capacitive touch back key underneath the screen with the Nokia X, rather than the three used in the Lumia range.
Preliminary specs for the Nokia X appeared in some AnTuTu benchmarks earlier this month, suggesting the device will run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor of unknown model and clock speed.
Running on Android 4.4 KitKat, the Nokia X will also reportedly feature a 5-megapixel rear camera.
That’s all we know about the hardware within the Nokia X, but we’ve seen a fair few screengrabs of the heavily Windows Phone influenced Nokia Android UI.

HTC One Android 4 4 KitKat update to launch next week
Following much talk, HTC has confirmed that the eagerly awaited HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update will start being rolled out from next week.

While the Taiwanese manufacturer has confirmed that the HTC One KitKat update will be made available for unlocked handset owners in the US within a matter of days, the company has yet to detail when UK residents can expect the software patch.
“HTC One owners, final KitKat software has entered carrier labs for final testing and expect certification next week,” the company announced via its official Twitter feed.
Far from a surprise release, 84 days ago the manufacturer announced that the HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update would be rolled out within 90 days, a promise that has ensured next week will see the software introduced.
While HTC continues to update its current flagship phone, attention has already turned to the company’s next-generation handset.
Recent HTC One 2 rumours have claimed that the second-generation device will be officially unveiled next month, in the days leading up to MWC 2014.
As well as boasting a further refined metal-hewn body, the HTC One 2, also doing the rounds under the moniker of the HTC M8, will be upgraded to a 5-inch, 1080p Full HD display, Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and the Android 4.4 KitKat OS as standard.
