iPhone 6 camera may stick at 8 megapixels
Apple’s next major smartphone revision, the iPhone 6, could keep the same megapixel count as its predecessors according to a recent report from China.

Starting with the iPhone 4S in 2011 and moving through the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S, each of the last three iPhones has sported an 8-megapixel rear camera.
If a recent report from The China Post is to be believed, so will the next one. According to the report, shares of Largan Precision Co. tumbled due to rumours that the iPhone 6 won’t feature a 13-megapixel camera.
Of course, we shouldn’t forget that the iPhone camera has improved dramatically over the past three iterations, despite the lack of movement on the resolution front. Enhancements to the phone’s optics, image sensor, and speed have been notable with each successive generation.
Similarly, the iPhone 6 camera is expected to represent a step forward from the current iPhone 5S model. According to the report, it will feature an optical image stabilisation system, which would reduce blur and improve night time shots considerably.
While we’ve seen such technology on other handsets (most notably the Nokia Lumia 920 and its successors), this would be the first time Apple has included it in an iPhone.
Apple’s decision to go with this rather than boosting the megapixel count is apparently due to a wish to attain maximum portability for the next generation iPhone. Whatever form it takes, even if that includes a larger screen, we’d expect it to be even thinner than the iPhone 5S, which would place restrictions on the kind of camera technology that can be included.

You might be used to tablets as somewhat precious, fragile things that need to be wrapped up in a protective case. Panasonic’s Toughpad range is different.
Back in June we reviewed the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1, a 10.1-inch Windows 8 tablet that could take some serious abuse whilst packing a punch of its own.
The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 takes the same principles and utilitarian design philosophy and applies it to the 7-inch form factor. This compact tablet is built to withstand a 5ft drop, and is water and dust proof to the point of IP65 certification thanks to its fully sealed fabless design.
Despite the heavy duty reinforcement that such ruggedness necessitates, the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 is only 18mm thick and weighs just 544g. Okay, so it won’t be giving the iPad mini 2 a run for its money on the form factor stakes, but then we wouldn’t even contemplate dropping Apple’s miniature marvel from 5-inches or exposing it to a little light drizzle.
Though Panasonic has physically scaled the Toughpad FZ-M1 back compared to the FZ-G1, it’s no less capable. It packs an Intel Core i5 vPro processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. It runs on the full Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit OS, and it can stretch to a respectable 8 hours of battery life.
Just about the only underwhelming spec is its 7-inch display, which comes with a rather paltry 1200 x 800 resolution. On the up side, it has been supplied with a special daylight-friendly coating, and it can be used even with heavy gloves on.
The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 will be available some time in early spring for around $2,099, which translates to about £1,280.

Apple met with the FDA reportedly readying Healthbook for iOS 8
Later this year, iOS 8 could give new meaning to the phrase "an Apple a day keeps the doctor away," as the iPhone maker is reportedly focusing on health tracking technology.
Apple executives met with directors of the US Food and Drug Administration to discuss mobile medical applications last month, The New York Times discovered in the FDAs public calendar.
The talks involved high-level Apple employees, including Jeff Williams, senior vice president of operations, Bud Tribble, vice president of software technology, and Michael OReilly, a medical doctor in Apples government affairs department.
The FDA meeting details havent been disclosed, but combined with a report today about iOS 8, it suggests that Apple is going all-in with health monitoring in its next iOS update.
Healthbook is supposed to be a pre-installed iOS 8 app that monitors and stores fitness metrics, according to unnamed sources who spoke to 9to5Mac.
Its interface is said to match Passbook, but instead of accumulating digital tickets and coupons, it calculates steps taken, calories burned, miles walked and weight loss.
These are pretty standard stat-tracking features that can be obtained from current wearables like the NikeFuel Band SE and Fitbit Force.
The Healthbook report contains a "one more thing" style surprise when you factor in the unconfirmed iWatch, which is said to enhance this software with vital signs the iPhone is incapable of tracking.
Blood pressure, hydration levels, heart rate, and possibly glucose levels are additional metrics that could be introduced, according to 9to5Macs sources.
Were not sure how wearable can keep track of hydration outside of a user manually logging every drink consumed, but when it comes to glucose levels, Google found a way in its smart lens prototype.
Logging medication information is said to initiate helpful pill-taking reminders at scheduled times, a feature that could tie into the existing iOS 7 Reminders app.
Apples first foray into health monitoring came last year when it introduced iPhone 5S and its M7 coprocessor that could keep track of steps.
The company showed how Nike was integrating its Nike Fuel metric into the new phone and Fitbit has since expanded its app to use the M7 processor to log steps walked even without a Fitbit tracker.
Itll be interesting to see if Apple works with or against Nike in realizing its health monitoring ambitions.
Apple CEO Tim Cook is still on the sneaker companys board and Apple snagged at least Nike employee last year.
Either way, this blip on Apples radar last year could become the highlight of iOS 8 this fall if development of Healthbook gets into shape and joins the rumored iPhone 6 and iWatch in time.

Windows Phone 8 will soon run on existing Android hardware
The Windows Phone operating system will soon be capable of being run on existing Android hardware, Microsoft has confirmed.
Teasing upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 features during MWC 2014, Microsoft has revealed that the forthcoming platform update will see system requirements for the Windows Phone OS changed. As such, manufacturers will be able to port the Windows Phone OS to existing Android hardware.
With Microsoft having recently offered Windows Phone 8.1 update hints, Greg Sullivan, Microsoft’s Director of Windows Phone has discussed in further detail with TrustedReviews the effects this will have on the platform, not just for consumers but manufacturers too.
Detailing some of the upcoming improvements, he revealed that the Windows Phone 8.1 update, which is still to be officially named, will see “support for Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 and 400 chipsets” added.
On top of this, the reworked OS will allow “support for soft keys so that you don’t have to have physical hardware buttons.”
Looking to the larger benefits of these seemingly small changes, Sullivan stated: “One of the important things there is that an OEM can now take a device – an existing device that they are shipping with Android on it today – and install Windows Phone on it.”
He added: “They can leverage and get scale with their investments, they don’t have to go and build a separate thing that costs more, it’s going to eliminate a lot of barriers and make it more efficient and economically feasible for more OEMs to get into that business.”
The Director of Windows Phone went on to tell us: “There is a change in how we are engaging our OEM partners.
“With Windows Phone 8, we shrunk the number of OEMs we worked with relative to Windows 7.5. That was intentional as we knew we were going to the new Kernal underneath and we wanted to focus our engineering resources on fewer OEMs to make sure that we got it right.
“Now we can turn our attention to growing the ecosystem, growing the install base, and having a wider range of support for new devices.”
Despite claiming big things are in store for the future of Windows Phone, the third OS as it has widely become known, was scarcely represented at Mobile World Congress this week.
With a mass of Android handsets and a fleet of Firefox OS devices unveiled, Microsoft’s mobile OS was completely overlooked by leading manufacturers.

Google Nexus 8 launch scheduled for mid 2014
The Google Nexus 8 has been tipped to launch later this year by upstream supply chain sources.

Google could launch an 8-inch Nexus tablet in the middle of this year in order to break free of the rammed 7-inch tablet market.
According to DigiTimes sources, Google has seen demand for the Google Nexus 7 2 impacted by the vast amount of competing 7-inch tablets on the market.
Due to this, Google is looking to focus on 8-inch alternatives for 2014, or so say sources from “the upstream supply chain”.
The original Nexus 7’s six million unit shipments has not been matched by the second-generation 7-inch Nexus tablet, so Google will launch the Nexus 8 to match the offering from Apple’s iPad mini 2 Retina display.
Apparently, Google has already partnered with Intel for the Nexus 8, which will therefore adopt an Intel Bay Trail processor. Of course, Qualcomm is rumoured to be trying to squash the deal.
Google’s Research and Development partner is tipped to be Asustek Computer, which is already responsible for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 7 2013.
The sources also suggest there will be more information surround the Google Nexus 8 in February, so we’ll keep you posted.
The Nexus 7 2 currently offers a 7-inch 1920 x 1200p Full HD display with a 323ppi image density protected by Corning glass.
Running on a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, it has 2GB of RAM alongside the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and 4G connectivity.
It has a 5-megapixel camera in the rear and 1.2-megapixels in the front for video calling.

What is the Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4?
The Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4 is a part of Samsung’s new business-orientated tablet line and a direct rival to the iPad mini 2. With a stunning 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution display, the smallest of the three new Tab PRO models pairs its premium specs sheet with the company’s new Magazine UX interface. The tablet is also available in 10.1 and 12.2-inch forms. Finalised pricing is yet to be announced, but a Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4 release date has been set for the latter part of Q1 2014.
Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4: Design
Cut from the same mould as Samsung’s recent tablet efforts, the Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4 is a plastic clad unit, with the cheaper construction materials again giving the device a less premium feel and appearance than some of its rivals.
The 8.4-inch body measures in at just 7.2mm thick and 21.9cm wide, meaning it is slim enough to be held, comfortably, in a single hand. What’s more, the streamlined 336g weight is evenly distributed across the tablet’s full form, giving it a comfortably balance when held single-handed.
Although the leather-effect rear, similar to that found on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, is again a disappointingly tacky addition, the tablet’s plastic body is less flimsy than its larger siblings. Thanks to its compact nature the Tab PRO 8.4 suffers from only minor bending when put under pressure. In contrast, the 12.2-inch model suffers from frankly ridiculous levels of unwanted flexing.
Set to be made available in both black and white colour schemes, the Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4 features the usual Android touch buttons and benefits from a relatively streamlined bezel that further enhances the already impressive display.
Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4: Screen
Undoubtedly, the tablet’s biggest talking point, the Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4 screen is, in short, stunning. With a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, the WXQGA LCD panel offers beautifully sharp, vibrant images that suffer from no pixilation or graining issues.
As tends to be the case on Samsung’s mobile products, the Tab PRO 8.4’s colour gamut, on first impressions at least, appeared a little warm and over saturated. Text is pin-sharp, however, and images impressively detailed and immersive.
The tablet’s 16:9 aspect ratio makes it ideal for multimedia consumption, with early video playback tests blowing us away thanks to smooth flowing, crisp visual content and half-decent inbuilt audio.
Responsive to the touch, the Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4’s screen was able to tackle all manner of multi-finger gesture controls without the slightest hint of fuss. Strangely, for such a business-themed tablet, Samsung has not bestowed the Tab PRO 8.4 with an integrated stylus, instead saving its S-Pen add-on for the larger Note PRO 12.2 offering.

The new Magazine UX is one of the Samsung Galaxy TabPRO 8.4’s main talking points and one which, based on first impressions, looks set to make the tablet a far more engaging device than past Samsung offerings.
Gone is the traditional point-and-shoot icon-based TouchWiz UI, in is a more immersive software overlay, bringing more detail direct to the user. Removing the need to jump in and out of multiple applications to get to desired information, the Magazine UX is something of a halfway house between Android and Windows 8.
Powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM, the tablet is speedy from the off, showing no signs of lagging or slow boot times during early use. Further testing will be required before final judgement can be passed on the tablet’s performance.
Aiding its business ilk, the Tab PRO 8.4 comes with a range of software pre-installed, from Samsung’s own word processing and presentation software to Easilydo Pro and Remote PC capabilities.
Sadly, due to the tablet’s compact size, the Tab PRO 8.4 does not offer enough on-screen real estate to display a full digital keyboard such as that introduced on the Samsung Galaxy Note PRO 12.2. Instead the standard, reduced tablet offering is present, limiting the device’s laptop-replacing credentials.
Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4: Features
As you would expect from a modern tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4 throws its business credentials up in the air to make room for integrated cameras front and rear. While the 2-megapixel forward-facing snapper can be utilised for video calls, the 8-megapixel camera is more for entertainment purposes.
Based on early use in less than ideal lighting conditions, this camera collection is distinctly average, offering largely flat, stilted images that failed to capture the atmosphere of the pictures. Although colours were washy and shots grainy, we will need to further test the cameras in our upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4 review before damming them completely.
Set to launch in both 16GB and 32GB storage options, the Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4’s capacity can be expanded by microSD up to 64GB.
With a 4800mAh Lithium-Ion battery under the hood, a full day’s use should be within reach, although further testing is required in this area.
First Impressions
While Samsung’s current trend is to make things bigger, the peewee Samsung Galaxy Tab PRO 8.4 is the most enticing of the company’s new ‘PRO’ branded tablets. With a more solid feel and slightly more appealing aesthetics than the larger options, the Tab PRO 8.4 is the closest the manufacturer has come to a true iPad rival.

ZTE to launch new Windows 8 tablet
ZTE has teased plans to launch a new Windows 8 tablet, suggesting such a device could be a “good penetration point” into Microsoft’s ecosystem.

Although remaining slightly hesitant on the launch of future Windows Phone handsets, the Chinese manufacturer has revealed that a new Windows 8 tablet could be on the horizon.
“We are watching closely the Windows Phone OS space. Probably tablet is a good penetration point for us,” Waiman Lam, ZTE’s Senior Director of Wireless Devices said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews.
Looking to the company’s future Windows-based plans, Lam stated: “For a phone, though, it depends on what the carriers and the market demand.”
He added: “In the past ZTE already launched a Windows Phone handset but now we see the increasing market share of the Windows phone OS and we are trying to find a smart way to penetrate the Windows Phone scene again.”
Although hinting at a potential Windows 8 tablet launch, ZTE executives have failed to offer any further details on when we can expect the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and Nokia Lumia 2520 rival to be formally unveiled.
ZTE launched an early Windows tablet back in 2012, although the 10-inch ZTE V98 received only a basic rollout, failing to incite much consumer interest.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom release date leaks coming to the UK July 8
A Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom release date has reportedly been set, with the camera heavy S4 spinoff pegged to go on sale in the UK on July 8.
One of a trio of Samsung Galaxy S4 spinoffs recently confirmed for launch, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom boasts an impressive camera with 10x optical zoom and will line up alongside the 4.3-inch Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and the waterproof Samsung Galaxy S4 Active.
While a number of recent reports have pegged the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini release date for this weekend, independent online retailer Clove has now claimed the S4 Zoom will go on sale a week on Monday.
Allowing wannabe S4 Zoom owners to pre-order their smartphone turn compact camera right now, the retailer has claimed the Android powered handset will start shipping on July 8. A Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom price tag has been set by the retailer at £442.80.
While Clove has stated “First stock [is] due week commencing July 8th,” Samsung has yet to offer any official word on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom release date.
In announcing the S4 Zoom, Active and Mini, Samsung suggested that, having looked to milk the cashcow that is its flagship smartphone brand dry, there would be no further Samsung Galaxy S4 spinoffs making an appearance.
“With the arrival of the Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Active and Galaxy S4 Zoom we can finally say the Galaxy S4 range is complete,” DJ Lee, President and Head of Sales and Marketing for Samsung’s IT and Mobile Communications Division said.
A July 8 Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom release date would see the South Korean manufacturer’s new camera phone offering hit retailers just days before what is likely to become its biggest rival is formally announced. On July 11 Nokia, at a New York launch event, is expected to unveil the Nokia Lumia 1020, a Windows Phone 8 handset with a 41-megapixel PureView camera.
Something of a hybrid device, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is half smartphone, half compact camera with the 4.3-inch device packing Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean alongside its showpiece 16-megapixel snapper with a 10x optical zoom.
With a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display lining up with a relatively low key 960 x 540p display and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom specs sheet sees the handset further benefit from a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, further expandable via microSD.

LG Windows Phone 8 mobile in the works
LG is working on a phone that runs the Windows Phone 8 operating system, with the handset currently at R&D phase.
According to Indian website Lightreading.in, LG is in the process of making its first Windows Phone 8 mobile.
LG India MD Soon H Kwon says that “we are actually working on our Windows Phone 8 OS powered smartphone,” although had no specific release plans to share about the device.
Although LG produced one of the first Windows Phone 7 mobiles, in the shape of the LG Optimus 7, this phone – if released – will be the first Windows Phone 8 handset to come from the company.
Kwon explained the company’s renewed interest in the Microsoft platform, saying “we believe that Windows will pick up going ahead, as Microsoft is pumping efforts into it.”
Reports on the future of Windows Phone vary wildly depending on where you look, though.
A Canalys report released in June 2013 suggests that Windows Phone will have a fairly healthy 12.7 per cent share of the mobile market by 2017. However, the latest figures show Windows Phone’s share shrinking.
Recent comScore stats analysing US mobile market share drop from 3.2 per cent to just 3 per cent between Q1 2013 and Q2 2013 – from bad to (slightly) worse.
To date, the highest-profile Windows Phone devices have come from Nokia. Its Lumia-series mobiles such as the Lumia 925 and Lumia 800 have been given far greater marketing support than any other Windows Phone handsets.
Although LG is considered a diminishing star in the mobile firmament by some, its production of the Google Nexus 4 has actually seen its market share rise in the last year.

Windows Phone 8 1 Action Centre screenshots leaked
Screenshots from the Windows Phone 8.1 Action Centre have leaked online showing off the incoming notifications centre.
A slide from an official Microsoft presentation has been leaked showcasing the Windows Phone 8.1 Action Centre notification hub.
The leaked slide calls the Action Centre a “central location to surface missed notifications.”
Microsoft is preparing Windows Phone 8.1 as the first major update to the Windows Phone 8 mobile OS, and this genuine Microsoft PowerPoint presentation slide suggests the notification centre is one of the main features.
According to the screenshots there will be two layers to the Windows Phone 8.1 Action Centre. The first level, revealed by a short swipe from the top of the screen, offers access to four basic quick settings. These will be shortcuts to settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode and something that’s called Driving mode.
All four of the basic shortcuts are customisable, so you can cater them to your most used settings toggles.
The secondary level to the Action Centre offers access to the full list of toasts and notifications from apps, similar to that offered by the notifications centres in Android and iOS devices.
Apparently, “apps can intelligently manage notifications [to] silently add, update and delete notifications”.
We’re not quite sure how this will function, but we guess that if you go into a related app manually the notifications will disappear accordingly.
Earlier this month, icons for the Windows Phone 8.1 Cortana voice assistant were leaked online, revealing some of its upcoming features.
The icons suggest that Cortana will be able to complete tasks ranging from basic ones like alarms, sending messages and searching the web right the way through to more complex tasks like alerting you to heavy traffic on your route, giving directions and even taking notes for you.
Windows Phone 8.1 is set to be officially unveiled during the Microsoft Build Conference in April.
